What Makes the Amrit Bharat Express Different?
Launched in late 2023, the Amrit Bharat Express is Indian Railways' answer to the growing demand for affordable yet modern long-distance travel. Unlike the premium, fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat trains, the Amrit Bharat is a non-AC service, featuring
sleeper and unreserved general coaches. Its primary goal is to provide a comfortable and faster travel option for millions of passengers, particularly migrant workers and those in lower-income brackets, without a hefty price tag. The trains themselves are a significant upgrade, sporting a vibrant orange and grey livery and equipped with amenities like cushioned berths, mobile charging points at every seat, improved bio-vacuum toilets, and passenger information systems.
The 7 New Routes Unveiled
The latest expansion, approved in mid-August 2026, greenlights seven crucial intercity and cross-country routes, set to enhance connectivity between major hubs and regional centers. These new weekly services are: 1. Dhanbad to Coimbatore: A major link connecting the coal capital of Jharkhand to the industrial hub of Tamil Nadu, passing through states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh. 2. Charlapalli to Gorakhpur: This service will connect Telangana to eastern Uttar Pradesh, benefiting passengers travelling through Nagpur, Bhopal, and Lucknow. 3. Gorakhpur to Bandra (Mumbai): A much-needed connection between eastern UP and Mumbai, with key stops at Kanpur, Agra, Kota, and Surat. 4. Gorakhpur to Delhi: An additional weekly option for passengers travelling from Gorakhpur to the national capital. 5. Prayagraj to Udhna (Surat): This route links the spiritual city of Prayagraj with the commercial center of Udhna in Gujarat. 6. Prayagraj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): A limited-stop service connecting Prayagraj to Mumbai via the Jabalpur-Itarsi route. 7. Subedarganj (Prayagraj) to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): Another service from the Prayagraj region to Mumbai, running through Satna, Jabalpur, and Nashik Road.
The 'Push-Pull' Technology Advantage
A key innovation powering the Amrit Bharat Express is its use of 'push-pull' technology. Each train is equipped with a locomotive at both the front and the back. While the front engine pulls the train, the one at the rear pushes it simultaneously. This configuration allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, significantly reducing overall journey time. This technology also eliminates the need for time-consuming engine reversals at terminal stations. Another major passenger benefit comes from the use of semi-permanent couplers, which connect the coaches more rigidly and reduce the jerks often felt during starts and stops, leading to a smoother, more comfortable ride.
A Boost for Affordable Long-Haul Travel
With operational speeds of up to 130 kmph, the Amrit Bharat trains are designed to be superfast services for long-haul routes, typically connecting cities more than 800 km apart. The introduction of these non-AC trains is a strategic move to address the massive demand for budget-friendly travel and ease the overcrowding that plagues many long-distance routes. By offering a modern travel experience with essential amenities at an affordable price point, Indian Railways aims to make cross-country journeys more accessible and dignified for a larger segment of the population. The expansion is part of a broader vision to modernise the entire rail network while keeping the needs of the common passenger at the forefront.
