making it the second-largest user base after the United States. More revealingly, 51.3% of this usage is work-related, compared to a global average of 46%. Conversely, personal or casual use in India is significantly lower, at just 27.8%, while the worldwide figure stands at 34.7%. This data suggests that for a large number of Indian professionals, AI is less of a novelty for writing poems or planning holidays and more of a dedicated tool for getting ahead. The usage is heavily concentrated in economically active states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Delhi, which are home to the country's major IT and business hubs.
The Primacy of Coding and Software Tasks
Diving deeper into the data, India's professional focus becomes even more pronounced. The country ranks first globally in the proportion of AI usage dedicated to software-related tasks, a staggering 45.2%. This is far ahead of other nations, underscoring the deep integration of AI within India's world-leading IT services sector. Common activities include developing and debugging websites, troubleshooting technical systems, and building business software. This trend shows that Indian developers and engineers are not just experimenting with AI but embedding it directly into their daily workflows to increase efficiency. Reports indicate Indian users achieve a remarkable 15x speedup on tasks, completing them in roughly 15 minutes with AI compared to nearly four hours without it.

Several factors contribute to this work-centric adoption. India's highly competitive job market and a strong cultural emphasis on professional growth and upskilling are significant drivers. For many, proficiency in AI is no longer a bonus but a necessity. A recent Microsoft and LinkedIn report revealed that 75% of Indian leaders would not hire someone lacking AI skills.
