India's ambitious plan revolves around a homegrown mobile operating system called BharOS, which stands for Bharat Operating System. Developed by a startup incubated at IIT Madras and backed by government funding, BharOS is being positioned as a direct
challenger to Google's Android and Apple's iOS. The core idea is to create a secure, self-reliant digital environment for Indian smartphone users. Unlike its global competitors, a key feature of BharOS is the absence of pre-installed or default apps. This 'No Default Apps' (NDA) approach is designed to give users more control over their devices, their data, and the permissions they grant to applications, a significant shift from current market practices.
The Push for Digital Sovereignty

The government's objective is to reduce the nation's dependence on foreign technology, especially in critical infrastructure like mobile communications. Taking on the Titans of Tech
The challenge ahead is monumental. Google's Android and Apple's iOS are not just operating systems; they are deeply entrenched ecosystems with millions of apps, legions of developers, and billions of users worldwide. Any new entrant must overcome enormous inertia. Past attempts by major corporations like Microsoft (with Windows Phone) and BlackBerry to create a third alternative have struggled to gain a foothold. The 'IndiaAI Mission', launched in 2024, aims to build sovereign AI capabilities tailored to India's diverse languages and societal needs.
