A New Hub for India's Quantum Future
Bengaluru, long considered India's Silicon Valley, is now a nerve centre for the country's push into quantum technology. The city is home to the Thematic Hub (T-Hub) for Quantum Computing, established at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
This initiative is a cornerstone of the National Quantum Mission (NQM), an ambitious government program approved in 2023 with a budget of over Rs 6,000 crore. The mission's goal is to make India a global leader in quantum technologies over the next eight years, and Bengaluru's ecosystem of premier research institutions and dynamic startups is pivotal to this strategy. Recent developments, like Alliance University launching an on-campus quantum computer built by local startup QpiAI, further highlight the city's growing capabilities.
What is a 'Shared' Research Platform?
At the core of this new initiative is the concept of a shared platform, which functions much like a library for high-tech equipment. Spearheaded by the Indian Science, Technology, and Engineering Facilities Map (I-STEM), the platform is a national portal that allows researchers, students, and startups from anywhere in India to access expensive, publicly funded research infrastructure. Instead of each institution needing to buy its own multi-crore quantum equipment, they can book time on centralized, state-of-the-art systems. This model addresses a major challenge in advanced research: under-utilised equipment. By creating a collaborative network, the I-STEM portal aims to democratize access, prevent redundant purchases, and ensure that the nation's best tools are used to their full potential by the brightest minds, regardless of their institutional affiliation.
From Theoretical Physics to Real-World Problems
The focus on "applied research" marks a significant shift from purely theoretical work to solving practical challenges. The National Quantum Mission's objectives are clear: develop quantum technologies that can drive economic growth and provide tangible solutions. Researchers using the shared facilities will tackle problems that are currently intractable for even the most powerful classical supercomputers. This includes designing new drugs and materials at the molecular level, creating ultra-secure communication networks for defence and finance, building more accurate financial models for the economy, and developing highly sensitive sensors for medical diagnostics and navigation. The mission has already supported startups making breakthroughs in these areas, demonstrating a clear path from laboratory research to commercial application.
Powering the National Quantum Mission
This Bengaluru-based platform is a critical engine for the National Quantum Mission's broader goals. The NQM aims to develop intermediate-scale quantum computers with 50 to 1,000 physical qubits within eight years. It also targets the creation of a secure quantum communication network across 2,000 kilometres within India. To achieve this, the mission is establishing four specialised T-Hubs across the country, focusing on Quantum Computing, Communication, Sensing & Metrology, and Materials & Devices. The Quantum Computing T-Hub at IISc Bengaluru leads the charge in developing the core computational power. By providing shared access to infrastructure and fostering collaboration between 21 different institutions, the platform helps build the skilled workforce and innovative ecosystem needed to meet these ambitious national targets.
