Understanding the New 'Attractiveness' Metric
This year, the definition of an attractive city is being redefined. The Global Tourism City Attractiveness Index 2026, a new study from Yanolja Research, Purdue University, and Kyung Hee University, has moved beyond traditional metrics. Instead of just
counting landmarks, it analyses social media data in 14 languages to measure the actual sentiment of travellers. The index ranks 200 cities based on four key pillars: scenery, culture, experiences, and hospitality, reflecting what visitors genuinely notice, enjoy, and recommend. This demand-side approach offers a fresh perspective on which cities are truly winning the hearts of global tourists.
1. New York: The Unbeatable Big Apple
Claiming the top spot is New York City. According to the index, the Big Apple's number one position is thanks to its powerful combination of high global visibility and overwhelmingly positive visitor sentiment. While it's a hub for finance and business, its attractiveness for tourists stems from its deep cultural footprint, from Broadway to its world-class museums and vibrant street life. The city's ability to constantly reinvent itself while maintaining its iconic status ensures it remains a primary destination for travellers from every corner of the world.
2. Paris: The Capital of Culture
Securing the second position, Paris continues to enchant global travellers. The French capital's allure is timeless, blending history, art, fashion, and gastronomy into an unmatched urban experience. From walks along the Seine to exploring its countless museums and neighbourhood cafes, Paris offers a rich tapestry of cultural activities. It consistently ranks high not just for its iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, but for the everyday charm that makes it one of the world's most visited and beloved cities.
3 & 4. Osaka and Kyoto: Japan's Dynamic Duo
Japan has made a significant mark on the 2026 list, with Osaka and Kyoto capturing the third and fourth spots respectively. One report noted Osaka received the highest levels of positive visitor evaluations, praised for its food, shopping, and theme parks, as well as a friendly and energetic culture. Kyoto, its neighbour, is celebrated for its emotional appeal and tranquil beauty. Together, they represent Japan's unique ability to blend the hyper-modern with deep-rooted tradition, offering travellers a diverse and highly satisfying range of experiences.
5. Seoul: The Hub of Modernity
Rounding out the top five is Seoul, South Korea. The city's rise highlights the growing global influence of its vibrant pop culture, cutting-edge technology, and dynamic culinary scene. As a city that seamlessly blends ancient palaces with futuristic architecture, Seoul offers a unique energy that resonates with modern travellers. Its strong performance, particularly in emotional appeal, shows that it has become a destination that is not just visited, but truly felt and remembered by tourists.
London, Rome, and Bangkok: The Enduring Favourites
Just outside the top five, a trio of historic and beloved cities hold their ground. London ranks sixth, Rome seventh, and Bangkok eighth. London maintains its position as a global command hub for its deep talent pool and cultural interaction. Rome's appeal is rooted in its unparalleled history and vibrant street life, while Bangkok is a favourite for its unique mix of culinary delights, bustling markets, and cultural landmarks. Their continued presence shows that while new trends emerge, the classic ingredients of a world-class city remain as potent as ever.
A Note on the Indian Context
While no Indian cities cracked the top tier of this particular tourism attractiveness index, their progress is being watched on other global stages. For instance, the Yanolja Research index placed Delhi at number 36 in attractiveness. Separately, indices focused on talent and business, such as the Savills 2026 Global Talent Cities Index, have highlighted cities like Bengaluru for their growing pools of low-cost skilled talent, indicating a different but equally important kind of global attractiveness.
