The Myth's Origin: A Famous NASA Study
The belief that houseplants can scrub the air clean largely stems from a well-known NASA study from 1989. Faced with the challenge of purifying air in sealed environments like space stations, researchers set out to see if common houseplants could help.
They placed plants in small, sealed chambers and introduced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzene and formaldehyde—common indoor pollutants. The results were promising: some plants were able to remove a significant percentage of these chemicals from the chamber's air over a 24-hour period. This groundbreaking research, known as the Clean Air Study, captured the public imagination and launched the enduring idea that a few potted plants could create a healthier indoor environment.
Reality Check: From Sealed Lab to Your Living Room
The issue is that our homes and offices are nothing like the small, sealed chambers used by NASA. A 2019 review of decades of research on the topic brought a dose of reality to the claim. Researchers concluded that in a typical room, the air exchange from natural ventilation—air moving through windows, doors, and cracks—dilutes pollutants far more effectively and quickly than plants can absorb them. To achieve the air-cleaning effects seen in the lab, you would need an impractically large number of plants. Estimates suggest you'd require anywhere from 10 to 1,000 plants per square meter of floor space to make a meaningful difference. That means a typical 1,500-square-foot home would need a dense forest of around 680 plants to compete with the air-clearing power of simply opening a window. While some studies suggest a smaller number of plants can have an effect, the consensus among many environmental scientists today is that plants are not an effective strategy for purifying indoor air in real-world settings.
But Don't Ditch Your Plants Just Yet
This doesn't mean your leafy friends are useless—far from it. While their air-purifying abilities may be overstated, the psychological benefits of indoor plants are well-documented and significant. The concept of biophilia suggests that humans have an innate tendency to connect with nature, and bringing plants indoors is an easy way to satisfy this. Studies have shown that interacting with plants can lower stress levels by reducing cortisol, the body's stress hormone. Being around greenery can also help reduce heart rate and blood pressure, enhance mood, improve concentration, and boost feelings of well-being. The simple act of caring for a plant provides a sense of purpose and a mindful break from daily stressors. So even if they aren't scrubbing the air, they are certainly making our indoor spaces much happier and more calming places to be.
The Real Champions of Clean Indoor Air

Regularly opening windows and doors, even for just a few minutes a day, allows fresh outdoor air to circulate and flush out accumulated indoor pollutants.
