is not accidental but the result of a concerted push through policies like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which encourages domestic manufacturing of solar components. The 'Make in India' initiative has been pivotal, transforming the nation from a major importer of solar panels to the world's second-largest solar PV manufacturer. While assembly capacity has soared, the next frontier is deepening the value chain by producing critical raw materials like polysilicon and wafers domestically. The boom extends beyond massive utility-scale solar farms; rooftop solar is also seeing explosive growth, with installations surging 131% in the first half of 2026, largely driven by government schemes aimed at solarizing millions of homes.
Reaching for the Skies with Aerospace
Simultaneously, India's aerospace sector is undergoing a profound transformation. Long dominated by state-owned enterprises, the industry is now rapidly opening up to the private sector, fostering a new era of innovation and competition. This strategic shift aims to make India a global hub for defence and aerospace manufacturing, reducing its historical dependence on imports. The government is actively encouraging private firms to participate in high-stakes projects, from advanced fighter jets to long-range rocket systems. The ambition extends beyond defence. India's space economy, valued at over $8 billion in 2023, is projected to swell to over $40 billion by 2030. The opening of the space sector to private participation in 2020 has unleashed a wave of startups like Skyroot and Agnikul, which are moving from prototypes to commercial launches, carving out a niche in the global market.
Fueling a High-Skill, High-Value Economy
Together, the solar and aerospace sectors are doing more than just boosting GDP; they are fundamentally reshaping India's industrial landscape. These industries demand a high-skill workforce, fostering expertise in advanced materials, precision engineering, electronics, and data science. The growth in aerospace manufacturing is creating an entire ecosystem of suppliers, particularly for global giants like Boeing and Airbus, who are increasingly sourcing components from India. Clean, abundant, and locally produced solar power is essential to fuel a competitive manufacturing economy. A robust aerospace and defence sector, in turn, ensures strategic autonomy and signals technological prowess on the world stage. There are powerful synergies between the two. The advanced electronics, materials science, and systems integration expertise developed for the aerospace industry can be leveraged to improve efficiency and durability in solar technology. A reliable energy grid, powered by solar, is a prerequisite for the kind of advanced manufacturing that aerospace requires. Both sectors are capital-intensive and technology-driven, positioning India not just as a follower but as a potential leader in the defining industries of the 21st century.
