The Great Mileage Debate
Since the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol—a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol—social media and driver forums have been buzzing with claims of significantly reduced mileage. Stories of fuel efficiency dropping by 20% or even 30% are common, causing
widespread concern among vehicle owners. While the government has actively pushed for ethanol blending to enhance energy security, reduce emissions, and support the agricultural sector, the everyday impact on a driver's wallet remains a hot topic. The core of the issue lies in a simple scientific fact: ethanol has a lower energy content, or calorific value, than pure petrol. This means that, in theory, your engine needs to burn slightly more E20 fuel to produce the same amount of power as it would with older E10 or unblended petrol. However, translating this into a single, reliable mileage-drop figure for every vehicle in India is impossible.
What the Official Data Says
When you look at the official figures, the narrative becomes one of variation, not uniformity. Different government bodies have presented slightly different findings, all of which debunk the dramatic claims seen online. A joint study by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), and Indian Oil Corporation found the mileage reduction could range from 2% to 6%, depending on the vehicle. Separately, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has quoted a figure closer to 3-5% for some vehicles. A 2021 report from the NITI Aayog went even deeper, estimating a drop of 6-7% for older four-wheelers designed for E10 fuel but only a 1-2% loss for new vehicles specifically designed and calibrated for E20. The key takeaway from all official sources is that there is no single magic number; the impact is a range, influenced by several critical factors.
Your Vehicle's Age and Tech Matter
The single most significant factor determining E20’s effect on your mileage is your vehicle itself. Indian automakers began producing E20-compliant vehicles from April 2023. These modern cars and bikes have engines and fuel systems specifically engineered and calibrated to run efficiently on the 20% ethanol blend. For these newer vehicles, the mileage drop is often minimal and sometimes offset by other performance benefits, such as smoother acceleration and better anti-knock characteristics due to ethanol's higher octane rating. In contrast, older vehicles—particularly those manufactured before the BS-VI era—were designed for E5 or E10 blends. While most can run on E20 without causing immediate damage, their engines are not tuned to optimise the fuel, leading to a more noticeable drop in fuel economy. The software calibration of the engine plays a crucial role in how gracefully it adapts to the different properties of E20 fuel.
Factors More Important Than Fuel
While drivers focus on the fuel blend, experts and testing agencies consistently point out that other variables have a far greater impact on your tank-to-tank mileage. Your driving style is paramount; aggressive acceleration and hard braking can slash your fuel economy by a much larger margin than the switch to E20. Similarly, driving in heavy city traffic versus cruising on a highway will produce vastly different results. Other critical factors include maintaining correct tyre pressure, regular vehicle servicing (clean air filters and spark plugs), and the load you carry. A poorly maintained car with underinflated tyres running in stop-start traffic will see a huge mileage penalty, regardless of whether it's running on E10 or E20. Before blaming the fuel for a sudden drop, it’s worth examining these more controllable aspects.
