The Scope of the Expansion
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved three significant multi-tracking projects with a combined investment of Rs 10,783 crore. These projects will add approximately 656 kilometres of railway lines across West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha,
Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. The expansion focuses on adding third and fourth lines to existing high-density routes, a strategy known as multi-tracking. This is designed to separate passenger and freight traffic, reduce delays, and increase the overall capacity of some of the nation's busiest railway corridors. The projects are slated for completion by the 2029-30 financial year and are expected to improve connectivity for nearly 4,800 villages.
A Breakdown of the Key Projects
The sanctioned plan is composed of three main projects. The first is the addition of a fourth line between Kharagpur in West Bengal and Jharsuguda (Bagdehi) in Odisha. The second is a new fourth line between Katni and Pendra Road in Madhya Pradesh. The third involves constructing a third line between Bilaspur (Uslapur) and Pendra Road in Chhattisgarh. These specific corridors were chosen because they are critical for the movement of essential industrial and agricultural goods. This strategic expansion is part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which aims for integrated and efficient infrastructure development.
Boosting Economic and Freight Capacity
A primary goal of this expansion is to bolster India's freight transportation capabilities. These routes are vital for carrying bulk commodities like coal, cement, iron, and steel. The government estimates that the upgrades will create an additional freight traffic capacity of about 27 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). By decongesting these lines, Indian Railways can run more freight trains, improve punctuality, and reduce overall logistics costs for businesses. This increased efficiency is expected to provide a significant boost to industrial activity in the eastern and central parts of the country.
Impact on Passengers and Regional Connectivity
While freight movement is a major focus, the benefits for passenger travel are also substantial. The expansion will directly benefit a combined population of around 5.6 million people across 14 districts. By easing congestion, the projects are expected to improve the reliability and speed of passenger services on these routes. Furthermore, the upgraded network will improve rail access to a number of important tourist and religious destinations. These include the Taratarini Temple, Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, and the Amarkantak pilgrimage site, potentially boosting regional tourism and local economies.
A Strategic National Investment
This Rs 10,783 crore investment represents a targeted effort to address critical infrastructure bottlenecks. The projects are fully funded by the central government and are viewed as a long-term investment in the nation's economic backbone. Beyond just adding tracks, the initiative is expected to have a positive environmental impact by shifting more freight from road to rail, which is a more energy-efficient mode of transport. This strategic move will not only enhance mobility but also strengthen supply chains, support industrial growth, and better integrate smaller towns and villages into the national economy.
