The Quantum Opportunity
Quantum computing isn’t just about making faster computers. It represents a fundamental shift in how we process information, promising to solve complex problems that are impossible for even the most powerful supercomputers today. From discovering new
medicines and materials to revolutionizing finance and securing communications, the potential is immense. Recognizing this, nations worldwide are in a race to build expertise and infrastructure. For India, and specifically for Bengaluru, establishing an early leadership position in this deep-tech field is not just an ambition but a strategic necessity for future economic growth and technological sovereignty.
A Mission-Driven Ecosystem
At the heart of this push is a powerful collaboration between government, academia, and industry. Both the national-level National Quantum Mission (NQM) and Karnataka's own state-level initiatives are pouring resources and strategic focus into building a complete ecosystem. The NQM has established thematic hubs across India, with the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru chosen to lead the charge in quantum computing. This is complemented by the state's ambitious plan to build a $20 billion quantum economy by 2035, an effort backed by significant funding and a clear strategic roadmap. The goal is no longer to keep breakthroughs confined to labs but to create a structured pathway from discovery to commercial deployment.
Academia as the Anchor
IISc is the anchor of this burgeoning ecosystem, launching the IISc Quantum Technology Initiative (IQTI) to consolidate its multidisciplinary research and actively engage with industry. A key component of this strategy is the IQTI-Industry Partnership Program, which facilitates collaboration and allows companies to participate in and benefit from academic research. Beyond research, academia is tackling the critical talent gap. IISc launched the country's first M.Tech program in Quantum Technology, and other institutions like Alliance University are now installing physical quantum computers on their campuses, giving students hands-on hardware experience. This direct access is crucial for training a new generation of quantum-ready engineers and scientists.
From Startups to Global Partnerships
The strategy is designed to nurture a vibrant startup culture. Bengaluru is already home to most of the startups backed by the National Quantum Mission, such as QNu Labs, which has developed advanced quantum communication networks, and QpiAI, which is building quantum processors. These startups benefit from funding, mentorship, and access to infrastructure. At the same time, the ecosystem is attracting international collaboration. In a significant move, IISc has partnered with the Tokyo-based startup Yaqumo to accelerate research and development in neutral-atom quantum computing, leveraging IISc's labs as a validation testbed. This blend of homegrown innovation and global partnership is essential for staying at the cutting edge.
Building the Quantum City
The most visible symbol of this ambition is the proposed Quantum City, set to come up near Hesaraghatta on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The Karnataka government has sanctioned land for this integrated innovation hub, which will house world-class laboratories, incubation centres, and hardware clusters. This is part of a dual-track roadmap: using AI for today's economy and quantum for tomorrow's breakthroughs. The Q-City aims to provide the shared infrastructure needed for fabrication, testing, and system integration, reducing the reliance on overseas facilities and helping startups and established companies scale their operations efficiently. While the full vision will take years to realise, the foundational work is a clear signal of intent to make Karnataka the undisputed quantum capital of Asia.
