A New Class of People-First Travel
The Amrit Bharat Express is a new category of train designed specifically for the common person, focusing on non-air-conditioned travel for long-distance routes. It was introduced to provide an affordable yet modern alternative to premium services, addressing
the heavy demand for travel among migrant workers and budget-conscious families. Unlike the fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat, the Amrit Bharat consists of second-class sleeper and unreserved general coaches, making it an accessible option for a wider passenger base. The core idea is to offer a dignified, comfortable, and faster journey without a significant price hike, with fares only about 15-17% higher than conventional mail or express trains.
The Push-Pull Advantage
A key innovation of the Amrit Bharat is its push-pull technology. Each train has a powerful WAP-5 or WAP-7 locomotive at both the front and the back. This setup allows the train to accelerate and decelerate much faster, significantly reducing travel time and eliminating the need for engine reversals at terminal stations. For passengers, this technology translates to a smoother, jerk-free ride. The trains use semi-permanent couplers, similar to those in Vande Bharat and metro trains, which prevent the jolts typically felt during starts and stops. This engineering leap makes long journeys less tiring and more efficient, allowing the trains to operate at speeds up to 130 km/h.
Connecting Bharat's Corners
The latest expansion introduces several crucial long-distance routes, strengthening connectivity between major economic hubs and smaller towns across India. New services approved in August 2026 include routes like Dhanbad to Coimbatore, connecting the coalfields of Jharkhand with the industrial heart of Tamil Nadu. Another significant addition is the Charlapalli (Hyderabad) to Gorakhpur service, creating a vital link for labourers and pilgrims between Telangana and Uttar Pradesh via cities like Bhopal and Lucknow. Other newly sanctioned routes include services connecting Prayagraj with Mumbai (LTT) and Udhna (Surat), as well as Gorakhpur with Mumbai (Bandra Terminus), easing travel on some of the country's most dense corridors.
Upgraded Onboard Experience
The Amrit Bharat trains are a significant upgrade from older non-AC coaches. Passengers will find aesthetically designed, cushioned seats and berths, providing more comfort on overnight journeys. Each seat has a dedicated mobile charging point with a holder, and foldable snack tables and bottle holders add convenience. The toilets are a major improvement, featuring modern, modular designs that are easier to clean, akin to those in Vande Bharat trains. For safety and ease of movement, the gangways between coaches are fully sealed, protecting passengers from the elements and reducing noise. Other modern features include CCTV cameras in all coaches, an aerosol-based fire suppression system, and a radium illumination flooring strip for visibility at night.
The Broader Vision for Rail Travel
The expansion of the Amrit Bharat network is part of a larger strategy by Indian Railways to modernize its infrastructure while keeping travel accessible. By introducing more non-AC coaches with modern amenities, the railways aim to reduce overcrowding and provide a comfortable travel experience for passengers in the general and sleeper classes. This initiative complements the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which focuses on redeveloping over 1,300 stations nationwide with improved facilities, signage, and accessibility. Together, these efforts represent a commitment to enhancing the entire journey for the common passenger, from station entry to final destination, making rail travel safer, faster, and more dignified for all.
