What is El Niño, Really?
At its heart, El Niño is a climate pattern that begins with the unusual warming of the surface waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Think of the Pacific as a giant bathtub where, normally, winds push warm water to one side (towards
Asia) and allow cooler water to rise up on the other side (near South America). During an El Niño event, which happens irregularly every two to seven years, those normal winds weaken. This allows the warm water to slosh back towards the centre and east, disrupting the entire system. This is the warm phase of a larger cycle called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, or ENSO. Its opposite, the cool phase, is called La Niña.
The Link to India’s Monsoon
How does a warm patch of ocean so far away affect India's life-giving monsoon? The connection happens through the atmosphere. The warming of the Pacific Ocean alters a massive atmospheric circulation pattern, sometimes called the Walker Circulation, that influences weather globally. Normally, this circulation helps drive moisture-laden winds from the ocean towards the Indian subcontinent. When El Niño disrupts this pattern, it can weaken the engine of the southwest monsoon. This often results in suppressed rainfall over India, leading to concerns about drought conditions. Historically, a significant number of India's drought years have coincided with El Niño events.
Is El Niño the Only Villain?
While El Niño is a major player, it's not the only factor determining the monsoon's fate. India's weather is complex, and another important character in this story is the Indian Ocean Dipole, or IOD. The IOD is a similar ocean-atmosphere phenomenon but occurs within the Indian Ocean itself. It has two phases: positive and negative. A 'positive' IOD, where the western Indian Ocean near Africa is warmer than the east, is generally beneficial for the Indian monsoon, pushing more rainfall towards the subcontinent. Sometimes, a positive IOD can counteract the negative effects of an El Niño, leading to a normal monsoon even in an El Niño year. Conversely, a 'negative' IOD can worsen dry conditions.
Why This Matters for Every Indian
The performance of the monsoon is deeply tied to the nation's well-being. Nearly half of India's workforce is employed in agriculture, and a large portion of our farmland is rain-fed, with no access to irrigation. A weak monsoon caused by El Niño can lead to delayed crop sowing, reduced harvests of critical crops like rice and pulses, and lower incomes for millions of farmers. The ripple effects are felt by everyone. Lower agricultural output can lead to food price inflation, straining household budgets. It also means depleted reservoirs, which affects drinking water supplies and reduces hydropower generation, potentially increasing electricity demand during hotter weather.
The Outlook for 2026
According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and other global agencies, a strong El Niño event is developing and expected to intensify from August through October 2026. Forecasts indicate a high probability of this El Niño continuing through the later months of the year, raising concerns about its impact on global weather patterns. For India, this strengthening El Niño increases the risk of below-normal rainfall. However, forecasters are also monitoring the potential development of a positive Indian Ocean Dipole. While the El Niño threatens to suppress rainfall, a positive IOD could potentially provide a partial buffer, though the final outcome remains something authorities and farmers will be watching closely.
