In a move that addresses a long-standing demand, Central Railway has inaugurated a new daily express train connecting Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Sawantwadi Road in the Sindhudurg district. This service was launched on September
3, 2026, and is expected to provide a significant boost to tourism and trade in the South Konkan region. The train aims to improve connectivity to popular destinations like Kankavli, Kudal, and Sawantwadi, making it easier for travellers to access the pristine beaches and scenic landscapes of the area. Officials believe this will also ease the pressure on other Konkan-bound trains that depart from Dadar and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.

The new service offers a convenient overnight journey from Mumbai. Train No. 15087, the CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express, is scheduled to depart from CSMT at 11:55 PM daily and arrive at Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 PM the next day. For the return journey, Train No. 15088 will leave Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 PM and reach CSMT at 6:40 AM the following morning. The route covers approximately 510 km and includes 21 intermediate halts, ensuring wide connectivity across the region. Key stops along the way include Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Roha, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal. The train features a modern LHB rake with a mix of AC First Class, AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, sleeper, and general second-class coaches, catering to different budgets and comfort levels.

Driving is another popular choice, though the Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH-66) has been plagued by long-standing construction delays. While major sections are now four-laned, some stretches, particularly between Panvel and Indapur, remain challenging with potholes and diversions, and the journey can take 10-13 hours. Regular state transport and private buses also offer budget-friendly travel, connecting Mumbai to major Konkan towns like Chiplun, Ratnagiri, and Kankavli. For those short on time, flying into Goa's Mopa or Dabolim airports and then travelling north by road is a viable, albeit more expensive, option.
