The journey between two of South India's most revered temple towns just received a spectacular upgrade. Southern Railway has introduced a Vistadome coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, promising travellers an immersive scenic experience.
A Window to the Western Ghats
Indian Railways
is transforming the travel experience on key scenic routes with its state-of-the-art Vistadome coaches, and the latest to join this exclusive club is the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (16327/16328). For the first time on a train operating through Kerala, this special coach offers passengers a front-row seat to nature's grandeur. The Vistadome coach is an air-conditioned chair car designed for sightseeing, featuring enormous glass windows and a transparent glass roof. Its 42 seats can rotate 180 degrees, allowing passengers to always face the direction of the best views or converse more easily with fellow travellers. An observation lounge at the rear provides an even wider, unobstructed perspective of the tracks and landscape receding into the distance.
The Scenic Sengottai-Punalur Route
The primary allure of this journey is the magnificent Sengottai-Punalur ghat section, a stretch renowned for winding through the heart of the Western Ghats. Passengers are treated to panoramic vistas of misty mountains, dense green forests, and lush valleys. The train navigates numerous tunnels and bridges, including the historic 13-Arch Bridge (Pathimoonu Kannara Bridge), a celebrated engineering marvel. The route is dotted with natural attractions, including glimpses of the Palaruvi and Kazhuthurutty waterfalls and proximity to the Thenmala eco-tourism centre. This journey elevates a simple train ride into a memorable expedition, connecting the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai with the Sree Krishna Temple in Guruvayur.
Schedule and Trial Period
This new service is being offered on a temporary trial basis until mid-January 2027 to gauge passenger response. The Vistadome coach is not available every day, so planning ahead is crucial. For Train No. 16327 from Madurai to Guruvayur, the service runs on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The trial period for this direction is from October 22, 2026, to January 15, 2027. For the return journey, Train No. 16328 from Guruvayur to Madurai features the coach on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays, with the service running from October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027.
Fares and Booking Details
Tickets for this premium experience are priced differently from standard classes. The fare for the full journey from Madurai to Guruvayur in the Vistadome coach is approximately ₹1,875 per person. Fares for shorter distances are also available, such as Madurai to Punalur for around ₹1,010 and Madurai to Ernakulam Town for about ₹1,570. Bookings can be made through the IRCTC website or app. When searching, passengers should look for the 'Executive Vistadome' (EV) class. Due to the limited number of 42 seats, these coaches are in high demand and have reportedly been selling out quickly, so advance booking is highly recommended.
Onboard Amenities
Beyond the breathtaking views, the Vistadome coach offers a host of modern amenities to ensure a comfortable journey. Passengers have access to a Wi-Fi-based information system and an entertainment system with digital screens. Each seat is equipped with its own mobile charging socket. The coach also features automatic sliding doors, modern bio-toilets, and a mini pantry area with a microwave, hot case, and refrigerator to provide refreshments. These features, combined with the unique design, make the Vistadome experience a significant upgrade over conventional train travel.
