A New Class of Travel for the Masses
The Amrit Bharat Express is not just another train; it's a new category of superfast service designed for long-distance travel, specifically catering to the common person. These are non-air-conditioned trains, featuring both sleeper and unreserved general
coaches, intended to connect cities more than 800 kilometres apart. The key innovation lies in its 'push-pull' technology. With a powerful locomotive at both the front and rear, the train can accelerate and decelerate much faster, saving significant time on routes with frequent speed restrictions. This setup allows the train to reach a maximum operational speed of 130 kmph, offering a quicker journey without the premium price tag of services like Vande Bharat. The core idea is to provide a dignified, speedy, and affordable travel option, addressing overcrowding on popular routes and improving mass mobility.
The Seven New Corridors of Connectivity
The Railway Board's latest approval introduces seven crucial new routes that span the length and breadth of the country. These new services will create vital links between industrial hubs, pilgrimage sites, and major cities. The approved routes are: Dhanbad to Coimbatore, connecting Jharkhand with South India; Charlapalli (Telangana) to Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh); Prayagraj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai); Prayagraj to Udhna (Surat); and two services originating from Gorakhpur, one to Delhi and another to Bandra Terminus (Mumbai). The seventh approved train is the Subedarganj-Lokmanya Tilak Express. This expansion connects diverse regions, from the coalfields of Dhanbad to the textile hub of Coimbatore and the bustling metropolises of Mumbai and Delhi.
More Than Just Speed and Affordability
While speed and low cost are the main attractions, the Amrit Bharat Express also brings a significant upgrade in passenger amenities for non-AC travel. The coaches are modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) types, known for their enhanced safety. Inside, passengers will find cushioned berths, foldable snack tables, mobile charging sockets for every passenger, and improved toilet facilities with bio-vacuum systems. Special attention has been paid to accessibility, with designated spaces and toilets for differently-abled passengers. For added safety and convenience, the trains are equipped with CCTV cameras, a public information system, and radium illumination flooring strips that glow in the dark for easy movement at night. The gangways between coaches are fully sealed, which reduces noise and keeps the interiors cleaner, providing a more pleasant journey.
A Strategic Vision for Indian Railways
This expansion is a key part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to modernise its fleet and make rail travel more accessible and efficient. The Amrit Bharat trains are designed to serve high-density routes, easing the pressure on existing mail and express trains that are often overcrowded. By offering a comfortable and faster alternative for non-AC passengers, the railways aim to bridge the gap between basic travel and premium services. The introduction of these trains is a calculated move to enhance economic mobility, support migrant workers who travel long distances for employment, and boost tourism by connecting cultural and religious centres. It represents a shift in philosophy, focusing on delivering a high-quality travel experience to the largest segment of its passenger base, ensuring that progress in rail technology benefits everyone.
