A Prehistoric Battle Frozen in Time
Imagine a scene from 125 million years ago: a badger-like mammal, Repenomamus robustus, locked in mortal combat with a plant-eating dinosaur three times its size. The mammal isn't the prey; it's the aggressor, sinking its teeth into the dinosaur's ribs.
This isn't a scene from a movie. It's a real fossil, unearthed in China's Liaoning Province, that has palaeontologists buzzing. The fossil captures a dynamic, violent interaction between a mammal and a Psittacosaurus, a dog-sized, two-legged dinosaur. The two are so intertwined that scientists believe a volcanic mudflow buried them mid-struggle, preserving this incredible moment for eternity. This discovery challenges the long-held notion that early mammals were timid, insect-eating creatures living in constant fear.
Not Just Dinosaur Food
For decades, the prevailing wisdom was that during the Mesozoic Era, mammals occupied a tiny, nocturnal niche, doing their best to avoid becoming a dinosaur's lunch. While there was evidence that some dinosaurs ate mammals—a fossil of the small, feathered dinosaur Microraptor was found with the foot of a mouse-sized mammal in its stomach—this new finding shows the relationship was not so one-sided. Prior to the discovery of the fighting pair, scientists already knew Repenomamus had a taste for dinosaur. Another fossil of the same species was found with the bones of a baby Psittacosaurus in its stomach. But this was often interpreted as scavenging. The new fossil, which shows an active attack on a larger dinosaur, is the first direct evidence of predatory behavior by a mammal on a dinosaur.
Big Mammals of the Cretaceous
Repenomamus was no mouse. The two known species, R. robustus and R. giganticus, were among the largest mammals of the Cretaceous Period. R. giganticus was the size of a modern dog, while R. robustus was comparable to a badger—a giant for a time when most mammals were the size of shrews. These creatures belonged to a now-extinct group called eutriconodonts and were clearly carnivorous. Their robust jaws and teeth were built for hunting vertebrates, not just insects. This shows that while dinosaurs dominated the largest ecological roles, mammals were carving out significant niches for themselves as formidable mid-sized predators.
The Battle for the Small Niche
The relationship between mammals and dinosaurs appears to be a two-way street of competition. While large dinosaurs likely kept mammals from evolving into huge creatures, a separate line of recent research suggests that mammals may have returned the favor at the smaller end of the scale. A study published in the journal Evolution explored why there seem to be no truly tiny dinosaurs, the size of a mouse or sparrow. The researchers propose that early mammals had already so successfully filled these tiny ecological niches—eating insects, seeds, and small vertebrates—that there was no room left for dinosaurs to evolve into those smaller forms. Essentially, our ancestors may have outcompeted the dinosaurs for the role of 'tiny creature', forcing dinosaurs to stay relatively large.
