A New Kind of Raging Bull
Lamborghini has officially entered the hybrid era with its best-selling model, introducing the Urus SE. This isn't just a token effort at electrification; it is a full-fledged plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the super SUV that shocked the world. The
challenge was immense: how to integrate electric motors and batteries, often associated with added weight and reduced excitement, into a vehicle defined by extreme performance. The result is not only a more efficient Urus but also the most powerful one ever built, signaling a major strategic shift for the storied Italian automaker.
The Dual Heart: A Potent Hybrid Powertrain
At the core of the Urus SE is a re-engineered twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine that works in tandem with an electric motor. The V8 itself is formidable, but when combined with the electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission, the total system output is a staggering 800 CV (roughly 789 horsepower) and 950 Nm of torque. This 'dual-heart' architecture allows the SE to leverage the instant torque of the electric motor for blistering acceleration while the V8 provides the top-end power and iconic soundtrack Lamborghini is famous for. Energy is stored in a 25.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack located under the load floor to maintain a low center of gravity.
Performance Redefined, Not Reduced
Any fears that a hybrid system would dull the Urus's edge are quickly dispelled by the numbers. The Urus SE can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. Its top speed is a breathtaking 312 km/h, making it faster than its purely internal combustion predecessors. In fact, the electric motor acts as a performance booster, filling in torque gaps and working with a new electric torque vectoring system to provide unprecedented agility and responsiveness for a vehicle of its size. This isn't just about straight-line speed; it's about using hybrid technology to create a more dynamic and engaging driving experience in every scenario.
More Than Just Speed: The Silent Side
For the first time in a Urus, drivers have the option of silence. Thanks to the 25.9 kWh battery, the Urus SE can travel more than 60 kilometres in pure electric mode, at speeds of up to 130 km/h. This EV Drive mode transforms the character of the SUV, allowing for quiet, emission-free journeys through city centres or residential areas. This versatility is a key part of the hybrid proposition, offering a level of practicality previously unseen in a Lamborghini. The system features multiple modes, including Hybrid, Performance, and Recharge, allowing the driver to choose how to deploy the electric power.
The Strategy: Direzione Cor Tauri
The Urus SE is a critical step in Lamborghini's broader electrification strategy, named 'Direzione Cor Tauri' (Towards Cor Tauri). This roadmap, backed by the largest investment in the company's history, outlines a three-phase plan to decarbonize its models. The first phase celebrated the combustion engine, the second is the current hybrid transition across the entire model range, and the third will see the launch of Lamborghini's first fully electric vehicle in the second half of the decade. The goal is to reduce CO2 emissions significantly while ensuring that every new model delivers even greater performance than the one it replaces, staying true to the brand's DNA.
