The Incident That Started It All
The story begins in Goa, where Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) runs a small cable TV business. He lives a simple life with his wife Nandini (Shriya Saran) and two daughters, Anju and Anu. Their world is shattered when Sam, the son of Inspector General of Police
Meera Deshmukh (Tabu), attempts to blackmail Anju with a secretly recorded video. During a confrontation at the Salgaonkar house, Sam is accidentally killed by Anju and Nandini. Panicked, they bury his body in their backyard compost pit. When Vijay returns home, he learns of the incident and his singular focus becomes protecting his family at all costs, using knowledge he has gleaned from his obsessive movie-watching habit. This event, taking place on October 2nd, sets in motion a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game.
Crafting the Perfect Alibi
Vijay immediately understands that the police will stop at nothing to find the IG's son. He quickly disposes of Sam's car and phone. His masterstroke is creating a seemingly unbreakable alibi. He takes his family on a trip to Panaji, making sure they visit an ashram, eat at a restaurant, and watch a movie. Crucially, he ensures they interact with the staff and collect receipts. By repeatedly discussing their trip, he drills the fabricated sequence of events into his family's minds, conditioning them to recall the alibi under pressure. He essentially manipulates time and memory, making it appear as though they were in Panaji on October 2nd and 3rd, the days surrounding Sam's disappearance.
The Investigation and a Hidden Grave
IG Meera Deshmukh leads a relentless investigation, quickly suspecting the Salgaonkars. Despite brutal interrogation tactics, particularly from the corrupt Inspector Gaitonde, the family sticks to their rehearsed story. Meera astutely figures out that Vijay manipulated the timeline, but she lacks concrete proof. The case turns when Vijay's youngest daughter, Anu, breaks under pressure and reveals where they buried the body. The police dig up the compost pit, only to find the carcass of a calf, which Vijay had planted earlier. Public sentiment turns against the police for their harsh methods, leading to Gaitonde's suspension and Meera's resignation. The climax reveals Vijay's most audacious move: he had moved Sam's body from the backyard and buried it under the foundation of the new police station that was being constructed at the time.
Seven Years Later: The Past Resurfaces
Drishyam 2 picks up seven years after the first film. Vijay is now a prosperous movie theatre owner, but his family, especially Anju, is still traumatized. The town hasn't forgotten the legend of Vijay Salgaonkar, and the police case remains a local ghost story. The peace is shattered when a new witness emerges: a man named David who, while hiding from the police seven years ago, saw Vijay leaving the under-construction police station on the night of October 2nd. Armed with this new lead, a new IG, Tarun Ahlawat (Akshaye Khanna), reopens the case, bringing Meera Deshmukh back into the fold.
The Ultimate Deception
The police excavate the floor of the station and discover skeletal remains, just as Vijay had feared. With the walls closing in, and his family cracking under renewed police pressure, Vijay makes a public confession, taking full blame for the crime. He is arrested, and it seems the law has finally caught up with him. However, this was all part of his long-term plan. In court, it is revealed that the DNA from the skeleton does not match Sam's. Vijay had anticipated this very outcome years prior. He had written a film script with a similar plot and befriended a morgue security guard. When Sam's body was exhumed, Vijay orchestrated a swap, replacing the evidence with a different set of skeletal remains he had acquired. With no proof, the case against him collapses. He is released, having outsmarted everyone once again, and anonymously delivers Sam's true cremated remains to his parents, providing them a twisted sense of closure.
