Community and Environmental Commitments
From the outset, OpenAI has emphasized a community-first approach. The company has pledged that Georgia families will not subsidize the project; OpenAI will cover the full cost of its own infrastructure and electricity needs, ensuring local utility rates are not impacted. The project also includes an $80 million community benefits commitment directed toward schools, public safety, and healthcare. On the environmental side, the data center will utilize a closed-loop water cooling system, which functions much like a car's radiator to recirculate water and minimize its ongoing draw from local sources. Furthermore, OpenAI has committed to being one of the first data centers designed to proactively reduce its power consumption during periods of high demand to support the local grid.
The Road Ahead
Project Camellia is a multi-year endeavor. Power from Georgia Power is scheduled to be delivered in phases between 2028 and 2032. The initial phase is expected to create approximately 400 permanent jobs, scaling up as the campus reaches its full capacity.
