What Is Reddit’s New Feature?
In a limited experiment that began rolling out on August 17, 2026, Reddit is giving some posts a new “Play” mode. When activated, this feature transforms a traditional text thread into a short, portrait-oriented video, much like you’d see on TikTok or Instagram
Reels. AI-generated voices narrate the original post and a selection of the top comments, while the text scrolls on screen, often with words lighting up karaoke-style as they are spoken. A clear disclaimer, “Real conversation voiced by AI,” appears on the video to maintain transparency. For now, the original thread remains completely untouched; users can simply toggle between the classic “Read” view and the new video experience.
The Strategic Push Into Video
This experiment is a direct response to a content trend that has flourished for years on other platforms. Creators on TikTok and YouTube have amassed millions of views by simply taking interesting Reddit threads—from subs like r/AskReddit or r/AmItheAsshole—and reading them aloud, often over unrelated video game footage. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged this phenomenon, noting that a “spoken Reddit” format is already proven to be highly engaging. By bringing this capability in-house, Reddit aims to capture the engagement and potential revenue that was previously leaking to its competitors. The goal is to provide a native solution for users who want to consume content passively, such as while commuting or exercising.
How the Test Works
The test is currently in a very early and limited phase, available for select English-language posts. It first appeared on the web before rolling out to iOS and Android apps. Reddit is manually curating the posts for this initial phase to ensure quality control and to learn what types of conversations work best in this format. The chosen threads are often text-only, avoiding the complexity of incorporating images or GIFs for now. One of the primary examples shared by the company was an eight-year-old post from the r/boardgames community about road trip games, demonstrating that the feature can be applied to Reddit's vast archive of evergreen content, not just new posts.
Potential Hurdles and User Reaction
While the strategy is clear, the execution faces challenges. The quality of AI voices can be a major sticking point for users, who often find them robotic or annoying. Early reactions from Reddit users have been mixed, with some expressing a preference for human narration and others dismissing the update as unnecessary. There are also technical hurdles, like the AI potentially mispronouncing usernames or community-specific slang. Furthermore, by selecting which comments to include in the video, Reddit is curating the conversation, which might not always reflect the most upvoted or representative replies from the original thread. The company has stated it is testing to see if the feature can feel “authentically Reddit” before any wider rollout.
