The change reflects the growing relationship between India and Uzbekistan, which has seen tourist numbers from India rise significantly in recent years. However, it's crucial to understand that this is not a blanket visa-free policy for all Indian passport holders; there are specific conditions that travellers must meet to be eligible.
Are You Eligible? The All-Important Details
This is the most important part to get right before you book your trip. The 30-day visa-free entry is conditional. To qualify, an Indian citizen must meet two key requirements. First, you must hold a valid, multiple-entry visa for one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States, or any country in the Schengen Area. Second, you must also hold a confirmed air ticket for a return flight to India or an onward flight to a third country. If you meet both of these criteria, you can enter Uzbekistan and stay for up to 30 days without needing to apply for a separate Uzbek visa. This is a fantastic opportunity for Indians who are already frequent international travellers.
Don't Qualify? There's Still an Easy Way In
If you don't have a valid visa for one of the countries mentioned above, don't worry. Travelling to Uzbekistan is still straightforward. The established electronic visa (e-visa) system remains the primary method for most Indian tourists. You can apply for an e-visa through Uzbekistan's official government portal (e-visa.gov.uz). The process is done entirely online: you fill out a form, upload a photo and a copy of your passport, and pay the fee, which is approximately $20 USD. The standard tourist e-visa is typically processed within a few working days and allows for a stay of up to 30 days. So, regardless of your eligibility for the new visa-free window, the path to Uzbekistan remains wide open.

The best times to visit are during the spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant for sightseeing. The local currency is the Uzbek som (UZS). While credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and restaurants in Tashkent, carrying cash is recommended for smaller towns and bazaars. English is not widely spoken outside of major tourist areas, but people are famously friendly and welcoming. Remember that all foreign visitors must register their stay with local authorities within 72 hours of arrival, a process most hotels handle automatically for their guests.
