The BRICS Imperative: More Than a Meeting
From September 12-13, 2026, New Delhi will be on the global stage, hosting the leaders of the BRICS nations—an influential bloc of major emerging economies. This group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has expanded to welcome
new members, amplifying its economic and political significance. Hosting the summit is a matter of national prestige, and India is focused on showcasing a capital that is clean, efficient, and world-class. The NDMC's extensive preparations are aimed at presenting a well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing city to the visiting international delegates and visitors.
A Makeover on a Deadline
The core of the NDMC's strategy involves 41 major roads, which have been grouped into 14 circles for intensive monitoring. Each circle is assigned a dedicated nodal officer responsible for daily inspections, ensuring that all civic work meets prescribed standards. This isn't just about patching up a few potholes. The work involves a comprehensive overhaul, from road resurfacing and footpath repairs to maintaining street furniture and ensuring proper drainage. With the summit just weeks away, the pressure is on to complete this ambitious project on time, transforming key areas of the city with remarkable speed.
More Than Just Roads
The beautification plan extends far beyond the asphalt. The NDMC has identified 15 locations for large floral boards, nine for elegant flower fountains, and 17 roundabouts that will receive special decorative illumination and landscaping. Horticulture teams are working to green brown patches, maintain vibrant green corridors, and install decorative planters along key routes. This initiative also includes a massive sanitation drive, with round-the-clock cleaning scheduled from September 9 to 14. Additional staff, mechanical sweepers, and mobile toilets will be deployed to maintain cleanliness. The council is also coordinating with hotels, market associations, and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to ensure a united effort in presenting a pristine city.
A Coordinated Effort
This massive undertaking is not being managed in isolation. The NDMC is working closely with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Delhi Government, and Delhi Police to ensure seamless coordination. A 24x7 command and control centre will monitor all civic services in real-time, using CCTV surveillance and field reports to address any issues promptly. Enforcement teams will also be active, removing unauthorised hoardings, regulating street vending, and managing illegal parking, particularly along VIP movement routes. Special arrangements have also been made for major events associated with the summit, such as the BRICS Bazaar, BRICS Run & Ride, and BRICS Food Festival.
Navigating the Upgrades
For the residents of Delhi, this pre-summit push means visible changes and some temporary inconveniences. While the NDMC aims to minimise disruption, the extensive work on major arterial roads may lead to traffic diversions. The civic body is also taking preemptive measures to handle potential waterlogging, a common issue during monsoon season, to ensure that roads remain clear. Medical teams and ambulances will be deployed at key locations, and inspections of food establishments will be intensified to ensure public health and safety during the summit period. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with the civic efforts, which promise long-term benefits for the city's infrastructure long after the summit concludes.
