First, What Are AI Agents?
Think beyond chatbots that simply answer questions. An enterprise AI agent is like a digital employee empowered to take action. These sophisticated systems are designed to understand goals, make decisions, and perform multi-step tasks across different
software platforms with minimal human supervision. Instead of just generating text, they actively execute work. This could mean anything from managing a customer's order and return process, processing an insurance claim, analyzing sales data to identify at-risk accounts, or optimizing a supply chain schedule. They are autonomous, goal-oriented, and capable of learning, which sets them apart from simpler automation tools.
A Near Tripling in Deployment
Salesforce's 2026 Agentic Enterprise Index provides a clear snapshot of this explosive growth. According to the report, which analyzed usage from February 2025 to April 2026, the average number of active AI agents per organization jumped from five to thirteen. This near-tripling signals a major shift from experimentation to wide-scale implementation. Fueling this acceleration is the speed of deployment; the time it takes to create and launch a new agent has fallen by 53%, down to an average of just 1.9 days. This allows businesses to treat agent deployment less like a major IT project and more like onboarding a new digital team member.
Smarter, More Capable Digital Workers
It’s not just the number of agents that’s growing, but also their capabilities. The average agent can now perform three times as many distinct business actions, with its skillset expanding from two to six unique skills. In high-demand sectors like retail, agents were found to handle up to nine different skills during peak shopping seasons. To measure this growing output, Salesforce introduced a metric called Agentic Work Units (AWUs), representing a discrete task completed by an agent. As of April 2026, output was growing at a compound monthly rate of 15%, with 734 million AWUs completed in that month alone, demonstrating that these agents are performing a significant volume of work.
The Business Impact Is Becoming Clear
This rapid adoption is directly translating to measurable business outcomes. For instance, the research found that retail companies deploying AI agents saw four times higher online sales growth compared to their peers who did not. In customer service, the impact is equally dramatic, with some companies now having seven out of every ten customer service sessions handled autonomously by AI agents. This is happening without a corresponding rise in customer escalations, suggesting users are growing to trust the technology. Employee adoption is also surging, with weekly user-initiated sessions with AI agents tripling over the last year as staff learns to delegate tasks and focus on more strategic work.
What This Means for Indian Businesses
The trend Salesforce identified is not happening in a vacuum and has significant implications for the Indian market. Indian enterprises are already in a strong technology investment cycle, with spending on AI and data transformation expected to account for up to 45% of change-related tech budgets in 2026. With AI adoption among Indian small and medium-sized enterprises also growing at double-digit rates, the stage is set for a similar explosion in agentic AI. For Indian businesses, these AI agents represent a powerful opportunity to automate complex processes, enhance customer experience, and boost productivity to compete more effectively on a global scale. The conversation is no longer about if businesses should adopt AI, but how quickly they can deploy these autonomous digital workforces to drive growth.
