What Exactly Is This Floating SUV Patent?
Mercedes-Benz has filed a patent for a system designed to allow a vehicle to enter water, float, navigate, and climb back onto land. The core of the invention isn't about strapping a propeller to a G-Class, but rather using the vehicle's existing components
in a highly intelligent way. The patent, filed with the German patent office by inventor Joerg Kneip, describes a control unit for managing a "swimming operation." It outlines a complete process, from entering the water to stabilizing the vehicle and exiting safely on the other side. While no specific model is named, most believe the technology is destined for the iconic G-Class, particularly the new electric G 580, which already has sophisticated individual wheel control.
How Does the Amphibious Tech Work?
The system relies on a combination of clever hardware and sophisticated software. To achieve buoyancy, the patent proposes removable flotation devices, likely made of foam or inflatable materials, that would be installed inside the wheel arches. These could be stored in the trunk or spare wheel area and inflated with the vehicle's tyre compressor when needed. Once floating, the vehicle wouldn’t use a traditional propeller. Instead, it would use its own wheels for propulsion. The system would spin the tyres, using them like paddles to move through the water. The vehicle's active suspension could also lower the front wheels deeper into the water, allowing them to act as rudders for steering. An onboard computer would manage the whole process, adjusting buoyancy at each corner to stay level and controlling wheel speeds to counter currents.
Is This Definitely for the Electric G-Class?
While the patent doesn't explicitly name the G-Class, the connection is hard to ignore. The new electric G 580 with EQ Technology is the perfect candidate. It already features four individually controlled electric motors—one for each wheel—which is crucial for the patent's concept of propulsion and steering. This setup allows for precise torque vectoring, meaning the system could spin wheels at different speeds or even in opposite directions to manoeuvre in water. The electric G-Class already boasts impressive water-fording capabilities and advanced off-road software, making it a natural platform for this next evolutionary step. This patent seems designed to build upon the electric G-Wagen’s unique abilities, pushing its go-anywhere reputation into entirely new territory.
Why Would Mercedes Build a Floating SUV?
Building an amphibious luxury SUV seems outlandish, but it serves several strategic purposes. Firstly, it reinforces the G-Class's identity as the ultimate, unstoppable off-roader. In a market crowded with capable SUVs, having one that can float is a powerful marketing advantage. Secondly, it’s a statement of engineering prowess. Much like the G-Class's ability to perform a “G-TURN” on the spot, a floating function would be a headline-grabbing feature that showcases the brand's innovative spirit. Finally, as competitors, particularly from China, begin to introduce amphibious features, Mercedes may be looking to future-proof its flagship off-roader and stay ahead of the curve. It's less about daily practicality and more about demonstrating ultimate capability.
Will You Be Able to Buy a Floating G-Class Soon?
It's important to remember that a patent is not a production plan. Automakers file patents for innovative ideas all the time, and many never make it into a finished product. This filing secures the intellectual property for Mercedes, allowing them to develop it without fear of being copied. There is currently no official confirmation that an amphibious G-Class is heading to showrooms. However, the level of detail in the patent, combined with a related filing from December 2025 for a floating vehicle with marine lighting, suggests this is more than just a fleeting thought.
