Imagine gliding through the lush, misty mountains of the Western Ghats, with panoramic views of cascading waterfalls and verdant valleys. A new scenic coach on the Madurai route makes this stunning journey more immersive than ever before.
The Route and Its Scenery
Southern Railway
has introduced a special Vistadome coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (Train Nos. 16327/16328), offering travellers a front-row seat to one of South India’s most picturesque rail journeys. The main highlight is the Sengottai-Punalur ghat section, a 50-kilometre stretch of track that winds through the heart of the Western Ghats, connecting Tamil Nadu and Kerala. As the train navigates this section, passengers are treated to breathtaking sights of dense forests, deep valleys, and numerous tunnels. Key attractions include spectacular waterfalls like Palaruvi and Kazhuthurutty, which are especially vibrant during and after the monsoon season. The journey also features an engineering marvel: the historic 13-arch bridge near Bhagavathipuram, offering a truly memorable photo opportunity.
Inside the Vistadome Coach
The Vistadome coach is designed specifically for sightseeing. Its most prominent features are the large, wide-pane glass windows and a transparent glass roof, which provide an uninterrupted, panoramic view of the surroundings. The coach accommodates 42 passengers in comfortable, executive chair car-style seats. These seats can rotate, allowing travellers to turn and face the direction with the best view without leaving their spot. For added comfort, the seats are also reclinable. The coach is fully air-conditioned and equipped with modern amenities, including Wi-Fi-based information systems and clean, modern toilet facilities, ensuring a luxurious travel experience.
Schedule and Timings
This special coach is currently operating on a trial basis until mid-January 2027. From Madurai to Guruvayur (Train No. 16327), the service runs four days a week: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On the return journey from Guruvayur to Madurai (Train No. 16328), the coach is available on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The train departs from Madurai Junction at 11:35 a.m., reaching the scenic Sengottai section around 2:30 p.m., which is when the most dramatic landscapes begin to unfold. Frequent stops along the ghat section allow passengers to fully absorb the region's natural beauty.
Booking, Fare, and High Demand
Tickets for the Vistadome coach can be booked through the official IRCTC website and app. When booking, travellers should look for the 'Executive Chair Car' (EC) class or the specific 'EV' code for this coach. The fare structure is dynamic. The basic fare starts at around ₹515, but the cost for the scenic stretch to Punalur is approximately ₹1,010, and a full end_to_end journey from Madurai to Guruvayur costs about ₹1,875. Since its launch, the coach has seen overwhelming demand, with tickets often being fully booked for up to 60 days in advance. Prospective travellers are strongly advised to plan and book their journey well ahead of time to secure a seat.
Making the Most of Your Journey
This train journey is more about the experience than the destination. For the best views, travel during or just after the monsoon season, when the landscape is at its greenest and the waterfalls are in full flow. The route connects two major pilgrimage sites—the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai and the Sree Krishna Temple in Guruvayur—making it a journey of both natural and spiritual significance. Rail enthusiasts and photographers have long celebrated this route, and the Vistadome coach finally provides the perfect way to capture its essence. With its unique combination of comfort and spectacular scenery, the service is being compared to other famous scenic rail journeys in India, such as those on the Konkan and Araku Valley routes.
