The Myth: Why We Crave the Post-Workout Ache
In fitness culture, the phrase “no pain, no gain” is often taken literally. Many of us have come to believe that if our muscles aren't aching the next day, we didn't push ourselves hard enough. This satisfying soreness feels like direct proof of effort,
a physical receipt for the calories we imagine we’ve burned. This belief is so common that a lack of soreness can sometimes lead to disappointment, making us question if our workout was even worthwhile. But equating this specific type of pain with progress and calorie expenditure is a fundamental misunderstanding of what’s happening in our bodies.
The Reality: What Is Muscle Soreness, Really?
That familiar post-exercise stiffness is known as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, or DOMS. It's the muscle pain and tenderness that typically sets in 24 to 72 hours after strenuous or unaccustomed exercise. The primary cause of DOMS is microscopic tears in your muscle fibres, especially from eccentric movements (like the lowering phase of a bicep curl or running downhill). Your body responds to this micro-trauma with inflammation as part of the repair process. This healing is what ultimately makes muscles stronger and more resilient. So, soreness is a sign of muscle repair and adaptation, not a direct measure of energy burned. It’s most pronounced when you try a new activity or significantly increase your workout intensity.
Breaking the Calorie Connection
The number of calories you burn is a measure of energy expenditure, while DOMS is a symptom of muscle damage and repair. While the repair process itself does use a small number of calories, it's not a significant amount compared to the calories burned during the actual activity. You can have an incredibly intense workout, burn a significant number of calories, and experience very little soreness, especially if your body is well-conditioned to that type of exercise. Conversely, you could try a new, low-intensity yoga pose that challenges your muscles in a novel way and feel quite sore the next day, despite not burning many calories. Soreness is more an indicator of novelty than of intensity or total energy output.
Smarter Ways to Measure a Good Workout
If soreness isn't the goal, what should you track instead? Focus on measurable performance indicators. The most important is progressive overload—the principle of gradually increasing the demands on your muscles over time. This could mean lifting slightly heavier weights, completing more repetitions or sets, reducing rest times, or improving your form. Other reliable metrics include your rate of perceived exertion (RPE), a subjective scale of how hard you feel you're working, and the simple 'talk test'. If you can comfortably chat but not sing, you're likely in a moderate-intensity zone, which is ideal for many health benefits. Tracking improvements in your endurance, strength, and overall performance are far more valuable signs of progress than how much you ache the next day.
When You Should Pay Attention to Soreness
While normal DOMS is not a sign of a better workout, it shouldn't be completely ignored. It can serve as a warning sign. If soreness is so severe that it limits your daily function or lasts for more than a few days, it’s a sign you likely overdid it, which can increase your risk of injury. It’s also crucial to distinguish between the dull, diffuse ache of DOMS and a sharp, sudden pain that occurs during a specific movement. The latter could indicate an injury that requires rest and potentially medical attention. Moderate soreness that subsides in a couple of days is normal, but constant, debilitating pain is a signal to ease up and allow your body to recover properly.
