What Exactly Is Soft Blocking?
Soft blocking is the act of forcing someone to unfollow you without them receiving a notification. The most common method involves blocking an account and then immediately unblocking it. On platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), this action
removes the person from your follower list and you from theirs, effectively resetting the connection. The person isn't permanently blocked; they can still search for your profile and interact with your public content, but your posts will no longer appear on their main feed. It’s a quiet way to create distance, like gently closing a door instead of slamming it shut.
The 'Why' Behind the Move
The primary motivation for soft blocking is to create digital distance without the confrontation of a 'hard' block. A hard block sends a clear, often aggressive message: "I want nothing to do with you." A soft block, however, is for more nuanced situations. Think of that acquaintance whose posts you don’t enjoy, a former colleague, or a distant relative you don’t want to offend. It's a way to curate your online experience and protect your mental space from content that might be annoying or triggering. For many, it's an act of self-preservation and boundary-setting in an increasingly connected world.
Soft Block vs. Mute vs. Hard Block
It's easy to get these terms confused, but they serve different purposes. A 'hard block' is the most extreme option; it makes you completely invisible to the other user and severs all contact. 'Muting' is the mildest; you remain followers, but you simply don't see their posts or stories in your feed. They are unaware you've muted them. The 'restrict' feature, available on Instagram, is a step further, limiting a user's ability to comment on your posts or see when you're online, without unfollowing them. A soft block sits in the middle. It severs the follower connection entirely, ensuring your content isn't automatically fed to them, but avoids the finality and potential drama of a full block.
Is This Really a Gen Z Thing?
While anyone can soft block, the trend is strongly associated with Gen Z for a few key reasons. This generation grew up with social media as a native language and has developed a more sophisticated, often unspoken, set of rules for online interaction. There's a greater emphasis on protecting one's mental health and setting digital boundaries. For a generation that navigates friendships, 'situationships', and breakups online, soft blocking offers a way to reclaim personal space without causing a major incident. It's seen as a more civilised way to move on, whispering “I need space” instead of shouting “Go away.”
How to Soft Block Someone
The process is simple on most platforms that have a follower system. On X or Instagram, you navigate to the person's profile you wish to soft block. Tap the three-dots menu and select 'Block.' A confirmation pop-up will usually appear. After confirming the block, immediately go back to their profile (you may have to search for it again) and, from the same menu, select 'Unblock.' The entire process takes only a few seconds. The result is that you are no longer following each other, creating a clean slate without a notification being sent to the other user. Some platforms, like X, have also introduced a native "Remove this follower" feature which achieves a similar outcome more directly.
