Delhi is offering a fresh perspective on the city with its first-ever river cruise on the Yamuna. The 'Namo Yamuna - River Safari' has begun trial runs, promising a new recreational experience for residents and tourists alike. Here is what you need to know.
The Route and Duration
The cruise operates on a specific, cleaner stretch of the Yamuna River, upstream of the Wazirabad Barrage. It covers a distance of approximately 5 to 7 kilometres between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur. A round trip journey is expected to last about 40 to 60 minutes, offering a peaceful escape and a unique vantage point of the city's landscape. The service is part of a larger initiative to develop the Yamuna as National Waterway 110 (NW-110) for tourism and transport. Trial runs for the service began on October 26, 2026, with a formal inauguration expected to follow after a few days of testing.
Onboard Experience and Amenities
The service utilises modern, eco-friendly vessels. Early reports describe a 40-seater boat, though initial operations may use a 30-passenger capacity vessel for the 40-minute rides. These boats are designed for sustainability, with some reports indicating they are electric-solar hybrids to ensure minimal environmental impact. For passenger comfort and safety, the boats are air-conditioned and equipped with essential amenities, including bio-toilets, a public announcement system, and safety jackets for all passengers. The aim is to provide a comfortable and secure recreational experience on the water.
Ticket Price and Booking
A ticket for the Yamuna river cruise is priced at ₹500 per person. This fare covers the approximately 40-minute journey along the designated route. According to officials, tickets are expected to be available for purchase online through the official Delhi Tourism website, offering a convenient way for visitors to book their spot in advance. There may also be ticket counters available at the jetty points at Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur for on-the-spot booking, though booking ahead is advisable, especially on weekends.
Operating Hours and Best Time to Visit
The cruise is planned to operate during daylight hours, with some sources indicating a schedule from 9 am to 7 pm. However, it's important to note that operations can be subject to weather conditions and the river's water levels, particularly during the monsoon season between July and September. It is always a good idea to confirm the schedule on the day of your planned visit. The service is being positioned as a family friendly picnic destination, especially for weekends. The formal launch is anticipated before the Chhath festival in November 2026, aiming to attract festive crowds.
The Vision for Yamuna
This cruise is the first phase of a broader plan to revitalise the Yamuna for tourism and as a potential mode of urban transport. The project is a collaborative effort between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and various Delhi government departments, including the DDA and Delhi Tourism. The goal is to transform this stretch of the river into a leisure corridor, complete with attractions like a food park, musical fountains, and water sports in the future. While the current operation is modest, it marks a significant step towards integrating the river into Delhi's cultural and recreational life and creating new employment opportunities.
