Serbia has launched a fully online e-visa application portal for Indian citizens. This is a significant shift that makes the process faster and more convenient. After the country ended its visa-free policy for Indians in early 2023, travellers were required
to apply for a traditional visa through an embassy. The new e-visa system eliminates the need for in-person appointments and allows applicants to submit all their documents and payments online. Once approved, the visa is delivered electronically via email, cutting down on administrative hurdles and making a trip to this Balkan nation much easier to arrange. This change applies to short-stay tourist and business visas (Visa C).
How to Apply for the E-Visa
The application process is designed to be straightforward. First, applicants must register an account on Serbia's official eGovernment portal. From there, you can access the visa application section and select the appropriate visa type, which for most tourists will be the short-stay Visa C. You will then fill out the application form with your personal and travel details, upload digital copies of the required documents, and pay the visa fee online. The system allows you to track your application's status through the portal. This digital process is a major improvement, replacing the paperwork and potential travel required for an embassy visit.
The Fine Print: Essential Entry Conditions
While the e-visa makes getting permission to travel easier, it does not change the fundamental requirements for entering Serbia. Travellers still need to meet several important conditions upon arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least 90 days beyond your planned departure date from Serbia and must have been issued within the last 10 years. Immigration officials will also expect you to provide proof of sufficient funds for your stay, with a general recommendation of having access to at least 50 euros per day. Furthermore, you must have mandatory travel health insurance with a minimum coverage of 20,000 euros. Proof of accommodation, like hotel bookings, and a return flight ticket are also standard requirements.
A Quick Document Checklist
Before you start your online application, it’s wise to have all your documents scanned and ready. For a Serbian e-visa, Indian applicants will typically need a clear scan of their passport's biographical page, a recent passport-sized digital photograph against a white background, and a completed online application form. You will also need to upload proof of your travel itinerary, which includes confirmed return flight tickets and hotel reservations for the duration of your stay. Proof of travel medical insurance is also a mandatory upload. Having these files organised will help ensure your application is submitted smoothly and without delays.
The Exception: Do You Already Have a Schengen Visa?
There's an important exception to Serbia's visa rule that many Indian travellers can use. If you hold a valid, multiple-entry visa or a residence permit for a Schengen Area country, the United Kingdom, or the United States, you can enter Serbia without a Serbian visa. This visa-free entry allows for a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, provided your other visa remains valid for your entire stay. This makes Serbia an easy and attractive side-trip for Indians who are already planning a broader European or American tour. Always present both your passport and the valid visa or residence permit at immigration.
