Introducing the GR GT
Toyota's Gazoo Racing (GR) division is developing a new halo supercar, the GR GT. This is not just another fast car; it represents a major statement from a company best known for mass-market efficiency. The GR GT is engineered as a road-legal version
of a GT3 race car, a philosophy that prioritizes track performance from the very beginning. Powering this flagship is a new hybrid system pairing a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with an electric motor to produce a targeted output of around 641 horsepower. This formidable power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, promising exhilarating performance. Recent appearances, including a dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, show a car ready to challenge established European supercars.
The Green Hell's Gauntlet
To ensure the GR GT can compete with the best, Toyota is honing it at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany. Nicknamed 'The Green Hell' by racing legend Jackie Stewart, this nearly 21-kilometre circuit is the ultimate automotive proving ground. With over 70 corners, dramatic elevation changes of nearly 1,000 feet, and unpredictable weather, the track puts every component of a car to an extreme test. Automakers from around the world flock here not just for headline-grabbing lap times, but for the invaluable data it provides. A single lap at the 'Ring can simulate thousands of kilometres of harsh road driving, revealing weaknesses in suspension, braking, aerodynamics, and engine durability that no other facility can.
Forged by the 'Ring
For the GR GT, the Nürburgring is more than a marketing tool; it's a critical development partner. Prototypes of the supercar have been regularly spotted pushing the limits on the circuit, sometimes being benchmarked directly against key rivals like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The GR GT is the culmination of a strategy by Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda to establish Gazoo Racing as a legitimate performance brand, much like Mercedes-AMG or BMW M. This car follows in the spiritual footsteps of legendary models like the Toyota 2000GT and the Lexus LFA. A key part of the GR philosophy is 'motorsport-bred cars', where technology and learnings from racing are directly applied to road cars. The GR GT takes this a step further by reversing the typical process: Toyota developed the GR GT3 race car first and is now deriving the road car from it. This approach ensures that the production model’s DNA is fundamentally rooted in competition. The car is expected to launch in 2027 and will even be sold without any Toyota badges, cementing GR's identity as a standalone performance entity.
