The King's Trail (Kungsleden)
Often hailed as one of the world's most beautiful hiking routes, the Kungsleden, or King's Trail, is Sweden's most famous long-distance path. Stretching over 440 kilometres from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south, it traverses some of Europe's
last true wilderness in Swedish Lapland. While hiking the entire trail takes about a month, most visitors tackle one of its well-marked sections. The most popular segment is the northernmost 105-kilometre stretch from Abisko to Nikkaluokta, which takes around a week. This portion offers dramatic Arctic landscapes, vast tundra, and views of Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest peak. A network of mountain cabins run by the Swedish Tourist Association offers accommodation and supplies, making this epic journey accessible even to less experienced trekkers. In the right season, hikers might even be rewarded with the ethereal glow of the Northern Lights.
The High Coast Trail (Höga Kustenleden)
For a truly unique landscape, the High Coast Trail offers a 135-kilometre journey through a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the coast of the Baltic Sea, this area is defined by its dramatic post-glacial rebound, where the land is still rising after the last Ice Age. This process has created a stunning landscape of high cliffs, deep forests, and rocky islands. The well-marked trail is divided into nine sections, winding from Hornöberget to Örnsköldsvik. Hikers can experience everything from sandy beaches and serene meadows to challenging climbs that reward them with panoramic sea views from 250 metres above sea level. Designated as one of Sweden's Signature Trails, it's a perfect blend of coastal and forest hiking with a fascinating geological story.
Sarek National Park
If your idea of breathtaking is raw, untamed, and truly wild, then Sarek National Park is your destination. Often called Europe's last wilderness, Sarek is not for the faint of heart. There are no marked trails, no cabins, and no facilities within the park's 1,970 square kilometres. Hiking here requires excellent navigation skills, self-sufficiency, and experience in challenging terrain that includes difficult river crossings. The reward for this effort is unparalleled solitude amidst a dramatic landscape of towering peaks, over 100 glaciers, and deep valleys carved by wild rivers. Home to wildlife like moose, bears, and wolverines, a trek through Sarek is a profound adventure for the experienced backpacker seeking to connect with nature in its most powerful form.
The Skåneleden Trail
Offering a complete contrast to the rugged north, the Skåneleden Trail showcases the gentle beauty of Sweden's southernmost province, Skåne. This extensive network of over 1,300 kilometres is divided into six sub-trails and 113 sections, winding through a diverse and accessible landscape. Hikers can explore dramatic rocky coastlines, stroll along white sandy beaches, and wander through lush beech forests and pastoral countryside. Because of its southern location, the trail is hikable for much of the year and is well-connected by public transport, making it easy to tackle day hikes or shorter multi-day trips. It’s a perfect choice for those seeking beautiful scenery without the extreme remoteness or difficulty of the alpine regions, proving that Sweden’s breathtaking paths come in all varieties.
