Why This Change Was Necessary
For years, securing a last-minute Tatkal ticket from a physical counter has been a test of endurance. Passengers often arrived the night before, battling sleep, weather, and immense crowds just to secure a spot. This chaotic environment was not only inconvenient
but also created opportunities for touts and unauthorized agents to occupy multiple positions in the queue, denying genuine travelers a fair chance. The old system was a simple, and often brutal, game of first-come, first-served. In response to long-standing complaints about overcrowding and unfair practices, Indian Railways has introduced this token system to streamline the offline booking experience and improve transparency.
How the New Token System Works
The new process decouples the time you arrive at the station from your position in the actual booking queue. Instead of a continuous physical line, there is now a structured, two-step process. First, passengers must collect a numbered token during a specific, short window before the main Tatkal booking hours begin. This token assigns you a serial number for the booking queue. After getting your token, you are free to wait elsewhere until the booking window opens and your number is called. This system is designed to prevent people from needing to camp out overnight.
Your Step-by-Step Guide to Booking
To navigate the new system successfully, timing is everything. There are separate token distribution windows for AC and non-AC classes. For AC Tatkal tickets, you must visit the PRS counter between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM to collect your token. The booking for these tickets begins at 10:00 AM. For non-AC classes like Sleeper, the token distribution is between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM, with the booking window opening at 11:00 AM. Once you have your token, you must wait for your number to be announced. When your turn comes, you can proceed to the counter to complete the transaction. Preparation is now more important than just showing up early.
What You Must Have with You
Simply getting a token is not enough; you must come prepared with all necessary documents. A valid, government-issued photo ID is mandatory for the person booking the ticket. Accepted forms of identification include an Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving Licence. It is also crucial to have the Tatkal reservation form filled out completely and correctly before your token number is called. Some railway zones have also introduced priority categories, giving preference to those booking for themselves or immediate family members. This may require carrying proof of relationship, so it is wise to be prepared.
Important Limitations to Know
This new token system applies exclusively to offline Tatkal bookings made at physical PRS counters. There are absolutely no changes to the online booking process via the IRCTC website or the Rail Connect mobile app. Furthermore, the rollout is being done in phases across different railway zones, starting with areas like the West Central Railway. Initially, each counter will issue a limited number of tokens—for instance, 10 for AC and 15 for non-AC classes. If Tatkal seats are still available after all token holders have been served, the counter may open for walk-in bookings on a traditional first-come, first-served basis.
