The Department of Space (DoS) has implemented a significant change in how it handles resignations and voluntary retirements. According to a memorandum issued in mid-July 2026, requests from Group 'A' scientific and technical personnel involved in crucial
national projects will no longer be approved as a matter of routine. This specifically targets scientists working on high-priority missions like the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, Chandrayaan follow-ups, and other advanced launch vehicle projects. Previously, under a 2020 rule, directors of individual ISRO centres had the authority to approve these exits. The new protocol centralises this power, requiring all such applications to be forwarded to the DoS headquarters in Delhi for a final decision, along with recommendations from the centre directors. This effectively puts a brake on quick exits for those with mission-critical knowledge.
