The 'Aagaman' Mission: A Historic Arrival
Hyderabad-based startup Skyroot Aerospace made history with the successful launch of its Vikram-1 rocket, a mission aptly named 'Aagaman', or 'arrival'. Lifting off from Sriharikota, the vehicle successfully reached its target low Earth orbit of around
450 kilometres and deployed its payloads. This monumental flight made India only the third country in the world, after the United States and China, to have a privately developed rocket achieve orbit. The success was hard-won, coming after the company's first suborbital flight back in 2022, and represents a massive leap for the nation's commercial space ambitions. Built with an all-carbon-composite structure and 3D-printed engines, the Vikram-1 is designed to be a cost-effective solution for launching small satellites, a market that is currently booming globally.
More Than a Rocket: A Foundational Policy Shift
This launch wasn't just a technical victory; it was the result of a deliberate strategic shift by the Indian government. For decades, space was the exclusive domain of the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). However, beginning in 2020, a series of reforms were introduced to open the sector to non-government entities. A key part of this was the creation of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), a single-window agency designed to promote, regulate, and facilitate private companies' entry into space activities. This new policy allows private firms like Skyroot to use ISRO's world-class facilities, from testing sites to launchpads, fostering a collaborative ecosystem rather than a purely competitive one. The goal is to let ISRO focus on advanced research and deep space exploration while private industry drives innovation in more routine services like satellite launches.

Skyroot’s success has thrown a spotlight on the entire Indian space-tech ecosystem, which now includes over 400 startups. Companies like Chennai's Agnikul Cosmos, which is developing 3D-printed rockets, and Bengaluru's Pixxel, which is building a constellation of hyperspectral imaging satellites, are part of this rapidly expanding industry. This growth is translating directly into high-skilled jobs. The demand is no longer just for a handful of top scientists at a government agency.
