Recent data brings both relief and a reality check for India's workforce. A Nomura report from August 2026 revealed that for every job lost or impacted by AI, approximately 2.6 new AI-related roles were created. Specifically, India saw 83,100 AI-related hires
against roughly 31,921 layoffs linked to the technology, making it a net positive environment. This growth is staggering, with some sectors like AI engineering seeing 51% year-on-year growth, according to LinkedIn's CEO. However, there's a significant catch. The same reports highlight a widening chasm between the jobs being created and the skills of the available workforce. The new roles are not for the same people whose jobs are being automated, such as those in support teams being replaced by chatbots. This creates a two-tier market: soaring demand for experienced, specialised professionals and shrinking opportunities for entry-level workers in traditional roles.
The Widening Skills Gap
The core of India's mixed jobs picture is the immense skills gap. While NASSCOM estimates a need for over a million AI professionals by 2026, the current supply is dangerously low. Some reports suggest that 97% of enterprises feel they lack the necessary in-house AI talent to fully implement the technology. This isn't just about a lack of people with 'AI' on their resume; it's a shortage of practical, production-ready skills. Hiring managers report that while entry-level AI roles receive hundreds of applications, less than 10% of candidates show job-ready competencies beyond a superficial familiarity with AI tools. Companies are no longer investing in mass hiring and post-joining training for entry-level roles that are now being automated. Instead, they are prioritising candidates who already possess specialised expertise, threatening the traditional career ladder for many Indian graduates.
The Roles Actually in Demand
So, where is the opportunity? The demand isn't for generic 'AI experts' but for specific roles. Machine Learning Engineer is the most hired-for position, appearing in a high percentage of AI job postings. Hot on its heels are Generative AI/LLM Developers, a field that has seen explosive growth in job postings since 2024. Other roles with high demand and strong salaries include Data Scientist, MLOps Engineer, Computer Vision Engineer, and AI Product Manager. An MLOps Engineer, who focuses on deploying and managing AI models, is noted for having the best salary-to-competition ratio for freshers. It's also crucial to note that many roles are accessible without a computer science degree; companies are increasingly hiring based on demonstrated skills and project portfolios rather than formal education alone. Roles like Prompt Engineer and AI-augmented Data Analyst offer entry points for those without a deep coding background.
Your Practical Career Strategy
Navigating this market requires a strategic, not panicked, approach. First, focus on acquiring production-grade skills. It's no longer enough to understand algorithms; you must be able to deploy models, monitor them, and ensure they work in real-world systems. Python remains a non-negotiable skill, appearing in nearly every AI job description, alongside frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch. Second, build a portfolio. Since companies now prioritise proven skills over degrees, a collection of real projects is your most valuable asset. Third, specialise. Instead of being a generalist, focus on a high-demand area like MLOps, Generative AI, or Natural Language Processing (NLP). Finally, embrace continuous learning. The skills required for a job in India are evolving by around 12% every year. Professionals who adapt and upskill will not only survive but lead India's technological transformation.
