Black Rice: The Northeastern Superfood
The latest addition to the PM’s public plate is black rice, which he has hailed as a superfood. Grown predominantly in India's Northeastern states like Manipur, Assam, and Meghalaya, this rice variety is gaining popularity for its perceived medicinal
value. Manipur's black rice, known as Chak-Hao, has even earned a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Black rice is a powerhouse of antioxidants, particularly anthocyanin, the same pigment that gives blueberries and blackberries their deep colour. Experts note it is rich in protein and fiber, and studies suggest it can aid in managing blood sugar levels and promoting heart health. By highlighting this regional grain, PM Modi not only promotes healthy eating but also shines a spotlight on the agricultural richness of the Northeast.
Khichdi: The Symbol of Simplicity
Perhaps no dish is more famously associated with PM Modi than khichdi. This simple, one-pot meal of rice and lentils is a staple he reportedly enjoys regularly. Beyond his personal preference, khichdi has been central to his political messaging. In 2017, it was the star of the World Food India event, where a massive 800 kg batch was cooked to popularise it as a 'Brand India' food. While he has used the term 'khichdi government' pejoratively to describe unstable coalitions, the dish itself represents humility, comfort, and nourishment in his dietary narrative. Anecdotes from his early political career even recall him teaching a party worker's wife how to prepare the perfect Sabudana Khichdi during Navratri.
Moringa Parathas: The Immunity Booster
PM Modi himself has mentioned his fondness for parathas made with moringa, or drumstick leaves. This isn't just a matter of taste; it aligns perfectly with his focus on Ayurvedic and nutrient-rich foods. Moringa is considered a superfood, packed with vitamins A and C, minerals, and antioxidants that are said to boost immunity and overall wellness. By incorporating this powerful green into a common Indian flatbread, it transforms a daily meal into a health statement, promoting the idea that traditional ingredients hold the key to vitality. Recipes for his preferred paratha are widely shared, underscoring its place in his culinary identity.
Himalayan Gucchi Mushrooms: A Taste for the Exotic
While most foods linked to the PM are simple, the mention of Gucchi mushrooms adds a touch of the exotic. These rare, wild morel mushrooms grow in the foothills of the Himalayas and are one of the most expensive vegetables in the world, with prices reportedly reaching tens of thousands of rupees per kilogram. His preference for them is said to have developed during his time working for his party in Himachal Pradesh. Though the topic became a point of political sparring in the past, with opponents using it to critique his lifestyle, the food itself speaks to an appreciation for rare, indigenous Indian produce. These mushrooms are not farmed commercially and must be foraged, adding to their mystique.
Dhokla and Gujarati Staples: A Nod to His Roots
No list would be complete without a mention of foods from his home state. PM Modi is known to be a fan of classic Gujarati dishes like dhokla, a steamed and savoury cake made from fermented gram flour. This light, protein-rich snack is a fixture in his publicly known diet. His preference for vegetarian, home-cooked meals is deeply rooted in his Gujarati background, with dishes like Sev Tameta Nu Shaak also making the list of his favourites. These choices ground his identity, connecting the global leader back to his regional origins and the simple, wholesome food he grew up with.
