The Grand Reopening Dates
After its annual closure for the monsoon season, Kaziranga National Park began welcoming tourists again on October 3, 2026. The park shuts down each year as the Brahmaputra River floods its vast grasslands, making roads impassable and allowing the ecosystem
to rejuvenate. The reopening is happening in phases. Jeep safaris in the popular Central Range (Kohora) and Western Range (Bagori) were the first to start. The Eastern (Agaratoli) and Burapahar ranges are expected to open gradually as track conditions improve. For those looking forward to the unique experience of an elephant safari, the expected start date is November 1, 2026, though this can vary based on ground preparations.
Jeep Safari Timings and Zones
The most common way to explore Kaziranga is by jeep safari, which takes you deep into the park's varied habitats. For the 2026-27 season, there are two daily slots available for booking. The morning safari entry is from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM, and the afternoon entry is from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM. Each safari tour typically lasts about two hours. The Central (Kohora) Range is highly visited, offering a balanced chance to see rhinos, elephants, and birdlife. The Western (Bagori) Range is particularly known for its high density of rhinos. The Eastern (Agoratoli) Range is a favourite among birdwatchers, especially for migratory birds, while the quieter Burapahar Range offers a less crowded experience.
Elephant Safari Details
An elephant-back safari offers a different perspective, allowing you to move through tall grasslands that jeeps can't access, often getting closer to rhinos. These safaris are exclusively held in the early morning, which is considered the best time for wildlife viewing. There are generally two one-hour slots: the first from 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM and the second from 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM. A third slot may be added if tourist demand is high. Elephant safaris are primarily available in the Western Range at Bagori and the Central Range at Kohora. Due to their popularity and the limited number of seats, it is highly recommended to book these well in advance of your visit.
How to Book Your Safari
Booking your safari in advance is crucial, especially during the peak tourist season which runs from November to April. Safaris can be booked through authorised counters at the park's range offices or through official tour operators and hotel travel desks. Many operators now offer online booking portals, which can simplify the process and secure your spot before you even arrive. When booking, you will need to provide a valid government-issued photo ID. Given that only two ranges are open initially in October, the daily vehicle quotas are limited, making early booking even more important to avoid disappointment.
Essential Tips for Your Visit
To make the most of your Kaziranga adventure, a little preparation goes a long way. The best months for a visit are generally considered to be from November to April, when the weather is dry and pleasant. Visiting in March and April can be particularly rewarding as animals gather around the receding water bodies. When on safari, it's advisable to wear neutral-coloured clothing to blend in with the surroundings and avoid bright colours. Carry essentials like binoculars for better wildlife spotting, a camera to capture the memories, and your original photo ID for entry permits. Most importantly, follow all park rules and the instructions of your guide to ensure a safe and respectful experience for both you and the park's incredible wildlife.
