According to Gartner, building the computational power required for AI represents "the largest infrastructure project ever attempted by humanity". This spending surge reflects a fundamental shift in business priorities, where investment in digital and AI capabilities is no longer a discretionary choice but a core component of corporate strategy and survival.
Software and Cloud Lead the Pack
The headline growth figure is impressive, but the real story lies in the specific segments driving this expansion. Software spending is forecast to grow by a robust 15.5% to reach $1.47 trillion. This includes everything from enterprise resource planning tools to the sophisticated platforms required to develop and deploy AI models. Even more dramatic is the growth in cloud infrastructure. Spending on Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), the foundational layer of the cloud provided by giants like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, is projected to jump by 29.3%. Projections indicate India's IT spending will see double-digit growth in 2026, with some analysts putting the figure as high as 13-14%. Software spending in India is a particularly bright spot, with forecasts predicting a 17.6% increase in 2026. This boom is powered by several unique local factors: the rapid expansion of Global Capability Centres (GCCs), strong domestic enterprise demand, and government policies like data localisation that are spurring investment in onshore data centres.
