A Game-Changer for Wildlife Tourism
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched a new initiative named 'Vandarshan' in collaboration with the Maharashtra Forest Department. This partnership, announced on International Tiger Day on July 29, 2026, introduces all-inclusive,
rail-based wildlife tourism packages. For years, planning a trip to see Maharashtra’s famed tigers involved a complex juggle of booking train tickets, finding accommodation, and, most critically, securing a safari permit from a portal known to sell out within minutes. This new service consolidates all these components into a single, hassle-free transaction, promising confirmed train travel, local transfers, accommodation, and an assured safari permit. It marks a significant shift, making the state's natural treasures more accessible to everyone from families to seasoned wildlife photographers.
Which Parks Are on the Itinerary?
The initial phase of the Vandarshan programme covers six key wildlife destinations in Maharashtra, focusing on the Vidarbha region, which is renowned for its tiger population. The packages provide access to four of the state's six tiger reserves: Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park, Bor Tiger Reserve, and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. Additionally, two important wildlife sanctuaries, Umred Karhandla and Tipeshwar, are also included in the offerings. These destinations are celebrated for their rich biodiversity and high chances of wildlife sightings, particularly the Royal Bengal Tiger. The initiative aims to put these parks firmly on the national tourism map by simplifying the entire travel process from start to finish.
How the All-in-One Booking Works
The core appeal of the Vandarshan packages is the guaranteed safari permit, the golden ticket for any wildlife enthusiast. Previously, travellers had to navigate the forest department's portal, where permits for popular core zones are snapped up months in advance. Now, IRCTC leverages an institutional quota to ensure access. The tours are structured as curated four-night, five-day itineraries departing from Mumbai's CSMT on the Vidarbha Express. While the packages bundle train fare, stays, and local transport, the real value lies in bypassing the uncertainty of permit booking. Through a single booking on the IRCTC platform, travellers can secure their entire trip. Five distinct itineraries are being rolled out to cater to different interests, including those of families, photographers, and first-time safari-goers.
The Real Value: Certainty Over Chaos
The financial cost of a safari permit at a premier park like Tadoba can be significant, but the true currency for most tourists is certainty. The Vandarshan initiative effectively ends the anxiety of planning a trip around a permit that might never materialise. By bundling confirmed entry with travel and lodging, IRCTC removes the biggest hurdle in wildlife tourism. This streamlined approach not only benefits travellers but also promotes sustainable and organised tourism. By managing tourist flow through curated packages, the initiative can help reduce pressure on park infrastructure and ensure a more controlled and eco-friendly visitor experience. It also promises to generate more stable livelihood opportunities for local communities that depend on tourism.
