Connecting India's financial capital with its primary tech hub, the Mumbai-Bengaluru corridor is one of the nation's busiest travel arteries. Indian Railways has introduced a new special service to manage the festive rush.
What Is This New Service?
Indian Railways has announced
a new weekly special train service connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru. This service, designated by train numbers 01013/01014, has been launched to accommodate the increased passenger demand expected during the festive seasons of Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath. Operated by Central Railway, the train is scheduled to make seven trips in each direction, running from mid-October to late November. The journey is slated to take approximately 23 hours and 30 minutes, offering a new overnight option for travellers on this popular route.
The Journey and Onboard Experience
The train is composed of 22 coaches, primarily consisting of 18 AC 3-Tier and two AC 2-Tier coaches, along with two generator vans, positioning it as a comfortable, fully air-conditioned option for a long-distance journey. The route is extensive, with 24 designated stops between the two megacities. Key stations on the itinerary include Dadar, Thane, Pune, Satara, Miraj, Belagavi, Hubballi, Davangere, and Tumakuru, connecting numerous important towns in Maharashtra and Karnataka. From Mumbai to Bengaluru, train number 01013 will depart CSMT just after midnight on Saturdays and arrive at SMVT late the same night. The return journey, train number 01014 will leave Bengaluru early on Sunday morning and reach Mumbai the following morning.
How It Compares: Train vs. Plane vs. Bus
At around 23.5 hours, this new special service's travel time is comparable to some existing train services, like the Udyan Express, which takes over 22 hours. However, the fastest regular trains on the route, such as the Trivandram Express, can complete the journey in as little as 18.5 hours. The key trade-off for travellers has always been between time, cost, and comfort. A direct flight between Mumbai and Bengaluru takes less than two hours. However, when factoring in travel to airports, check-in, and security, the total door-to-door time is closer to five hours. Air travel is the fastest but also the most expensive option, with fares fluctuating significantly. Overnight buses are another popular choice, typically taking 16 to 19 hours, which is faster than most trains but can be less comfortable for such a long journey. This new special train, therefore, fits into the landscape as an option for those who prioritise the comfort of a train berth over the raw speed of a bus or flight, especially during a period of high demand.
The Bigger Picture for a Busy Corridor
The introduction of this festival special highlights the immense and growing demand for connectivity between Mumbai and Bengaluru. While this train is a temporary measure, it is part of a larger conversation about upgrading this crucial route. There is persistent demand for more efficient services, and Indian Railways has already approved a Vande Bharat sleeper train for this corridor. That future service aims to dramatically reduce travel time to around 16-17 hours, offering a premium, high-speed alternative to both existing trains and buses. Another superfast train via Hubballi has also been proposed to bring the journey time down to around 18 hours. These future projects signal a long-term strategy to modernise and accelerate travel between India's economic powerhouses.
