What's Changing with Tatkal Bookings?
Anyone who has tried to book a last-minute train ticket knows the drill: long, uncertain queues that form hours before the Tatkal window even opens. To tackle this, Indian Railways has introduced a token system at select Passenger Reservation System (PRS)
counters starting August 1, 2026. This new process is specifically for offline bookings made in person at railway stations; the online booking system via the IRCTC website and app remains unchanged. The core idea is to eliminate the long, static queues and replace them with a more organised, number-based approach, reducing crowding and making the experience less stressful for passengers.
How the New Token System Works
Instead of waiting for hours, passengers now visit the counter during a specific, pre-allocated time slot to collect a token. These tokens are numbered sequentially and determine your place in the queue. For AC class tickets, which go on sale at 10:00 AM, tokens are distributed between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. For non-AC classes (like Sleeper), which become available at 11:00 AM, tokens are handed out between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM. After receiving a token, you can wait comfortably for your number to be called when the booking window opens, rather than standing in a physical line. This change aims to end the need for multiple visits or spending the entire morning at the station.
Your Photo ID Is the Key
A crucial part of this new system is the emphasis on valid photo identification. To get a token, you must present a valid, government-issued photo ID like an Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving Licence. This is a significant shift. Previously, ID was primarily checked during the journey itself. Now, it's required upfront to secure your spot in the queue. This measure helps ensure that tokens are non-transferable and that the person obtaining the token is the one intending to book, discouraging placeholders and other unfair practices. Some zones have even introduced priority categories, giving preference to those booking for themselves or their immediate family, which requires presenting ID for both the booker and the travelling family member.
A Step-by-Step Guide for Passengers
To navigate the new system smoothly, follow these steps: 1. Arrive at the station before the token distribution window for your class (AC or non-AC). 2. Have your valid photo ID and a filled-out reservation form ready. 3. Present your documents at the designated counter to receive a numbered token. 4. Wait for the main Tatkal booking window to open and for your token number to be announced. 5. When your turn comes, proceed to the counter to complete the payment and receive your ticket. Initially, counters are expected to issue a limited number of tokens—for instance, 10 for AC and 15 for non-AC—though this can be adjusted based on demand. If seats are still available after all token-holders have been served, bookings will open to walk-in passengers on a first-come, first-served basis.
