AI company Anthropic recently published a threat intelligence report with a series of startling findings: it had detected and disrupted several attempts to misuse its advanced AI model, Claude. Among the most concerning were five cases where users, described
as working scientists, tried to use the AI for research that could potentially support the development of biological weapons. The incidents, which took place between December 2025 and August 2026, involved queries about dangerous pathogens like avian influenza, the chikungunya virus, and methods for cataloging toxic venoms. In one instance, a user was flagged for attempting to use Claude to help write a grant application for gain-of-function research connected to a military research institute.
Caught by the Creator, Not in a Secret Lab
The word "caught" in the headline might conjure images of a dramatic raid on a hidden laboratory, but the truth is different. The users weren't exposed by a government agency or a whistleblower; they were flagged and stopped by Anthropic's own internal safety and monitoring systems. The company then banned the associated accounts and publicly disclosed the incidents in a detailed report. This is less a story about rogue scientists and more about an AI company policing its own technology. Anthropic stated it published the findings because it believes it has a responsibility to be transparent about malicious misuse and to help strengthen collective defenses against emerging threats.

Experts have warned that as models become more powerful, the risk that they could be used to cause catastrophic harm—whether through biology, cyber warfare, or other means—will only increase unless developers act proactively.
