From Scooters to Grid-Scale Power
Ola Electric has officially launched its comprehensive 'Shakti' energy storage portfolio, marking a strategic pivot from a purely electric vehicle manufacturer to a diversified clean energy company. Announced on India's 80th Independence Day, the Shakti series
is a suite of battery energy storage systems (BESS) designed to serve a wide spectrum of users, from individual households to large-scale industrial and utility applications. This move leverages the company's investment in its Krishnagiri Gigafactory and its development of indigenous Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery cell technology. By creating a single, vertically integrated architecture, Ola aims to provide solutions that can store power when it's abundant and release it when needed, addressing everything from home power cuts to national grid instability.
Powering Homes with Shakti Gen2
The entry point for consumers is the Shakti Gen2, a residential battery system designed for home backup, smart energy management, and solar power integration. It will be available in two main configurations: a 4.6 kWh model with a 3 kW output, and a larger 9.2 kWh model with a 6 kW output. Introductory pricing has been set at ₹99,999 and ₹1,74,999, respectively, with reservations open for a nominal fee. Deliveries for these home units are scheduled to begin in November 2026. These systems aim to provide a modern, lithium-ion alternative to the traditional inverter and lead-acid battery setups common in Indian households, offering a seamless solution for dealing with power outages and managing energy from rooftop solar panels.
Scaling Up for Business and Infrastructure
For the commercial sector, Ola has introduced the Shakti Rack. This modular system comes in two versions to cater to different business needs. The Shakti AC Rack provides 73 kWh of storage with an integrated inverter, making it suitable for facility backup, managing peak electricity demand, and optimising energy costs for commercial establishments. A separate Shakti DC Rack is targeted at critical infrastructure like telecom towers that require direct DC power. Both these commercial-grade products are slated for availability starting March 2027. This offering positions Ola to compete in a market that provides essential power reliability for businesses, small industries, and vital communication networks.
The 'Mahashakti' Grid-Scale Ambition
Perhaps the most ambitious component of the launch is the 'Mahashakti' platform, which moves Ola into the high-stakes world of industrial and utility-scale energy storage. This includes the Mahashakti Rack with 257 kWh of storage for large industrial loads and the massive Mahashakti container, a 6.26 MWh liquid-cooled system designed for power grid applications. These systems are crucial for stabilising the grid as more renewable energy sources like solar and wind are added. Recognizing the immense potential, Ola has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Axis Energy to potentially deploy up to 20 GWh of these battery systems by 2032, one of the largest planned deployments of domestic battery technology in the country.
A Vertically Integrated Future
Underpinning this entire strategy is Ola's commitment to vertical integration. By producing its own LFP cells at its Gigafactory, the company believes it can control costs, ensure supply chain security, and deliver safer, more reliable products. This 'cell-to-system' approach is a significant differentiator, allowing Ola to build a unified technological foundation for its mobility and energy storage businesses. The move comes as India is projected to need hundreds of gigawatt-hours of energy storage capacity by the early 2030s to support its renewable energy goals. While facing established competitors in the power backup space, Ola's bet is that its technology, scale, and brand recognition will allow it to capture a significant share of India's clean energy future, transforming it from a scooter company into an all-encompassing energy-tech giant.
