A Sweet Summer Surge
Across India, the demand for chilled desserts has seen a remarkable 19.2% year-on-year increase, according to recent data from Swiggy's 2026 summer trends report. This double-digit growth highlights a clear shift in consumer behaviour, moving desserts from an occasional
treat to a daily staple for beating the heat. While major metros continue to be large consumers, the trend is rapidly catching on in emerging cities. Amaravati and Thanjavur, for instance, have seen staggering growth of 63% and 44.1% respectively, showcasing a nationwide embrace of cold sweet treats. This isn't just a fleeting fad; it's a reflection of changing lifestyles, rising disposable incomes, and the sheer convenience of modern technology.
The Reign of the Mango King
Unsurprisingly, the king of fruits has also been crowned the king of summer desserts. Mango-flavoured treats, from ice creams to lassis and tarts, saw a collective demand growth of 19.3%. Food delivery platforms reported delivering an average of 1,547 mango lassis every single day between mid-April and mid-June. The craze led to some extraordinary orders, including one customer in Bhopal who purchased 120 pieces of mango cake in a single transaction, and a Mumbai resident who spent over ₹16,000 on mango gateau. Beyond the usual suspects, regional specialties like Pune's Mango Mastani also found new fans in cities like Nashik and Mysuru.
Beyond the Usual Scoops
While mango takes the top spot, India's palate for chilled desserts is becoming increasingly diverse. Coconut-flavoured ice cream has emerged as a national favourite, with its demand growing by 13.4%, especially in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Surat. The love for traditional Indian frozen desserts also remains strong. Kulfi, in its many forms, continues to be a cherished classic, recently earning a top spot on global lists of best frozen desserts. Its dense, creamy texture and variations like kesar-pista, falooda, and matka kulfi offer a nostalgic comfort that resonates deeply with consumers. Other chilled sweets like Phirni, a creamy rice pudding served cold, are also mainstays during festive occasions.
The Quick Commerce Revolution
A major catalyst for this dessert boom is the rise of quick commerce. Platforms like Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, and Blinkit have revolutionised consumption by closing the gap between a craving and its fulfilment to mere minutes. This has transformed dessert consumption from a planned, occasion-based activity into an impulse-driven, everyday habit. The robust cold-chain infrastructure built by these companies now makes it possible to get frozen treats delivered to your door at any time, with late-night orders after 9 PM becoming a significant trend. This accessibility has not only boosted sales for established brands but also lowered the barrier to entry for new, artisanal, and niche dessert makers.
What's Driving the Craving?
Several factors are feeding this growing appetite. Intensifying summer heat is an obvious driver, pushing consumers toward cooling food options. But deeper shifts are also at play. Rising urbanisation and higher disposable incomes mean more people can afford to indulge more often. Furthermore, there's a psychological shift. Quick commerce has made convenience a trigger for consumption itself; the easier it is to get something, the more it becomes part of a routine. Health consciousness is also shaping the market, with a growing demand for low-sugar, clean-label, and fruit-based options that offer indulgence without the guilt. Brands are responding with innovative products, from protein-infused ice creams to desserts based on authentic fruit textures rather than synthetic flavours.
