Understanding the Amrit Bharat Express
Launched as an affordable alternative for long-distance travel, the Amrit Bharat Express is designed for the common passenger. Unlike premium services, these non-AC trains focus on providing a comfortable and efficient journey at a lower cost, targeting
mass mobility on high-density routes. They are often called the 'common person's premium train,' featuring modern amenities, improved safety, and faster speeds compared to conventional mail and express trains. The key innovation is the use of a 'push-pull' locomotive configuration, with engines at both ends. This allows for rapid acceleration and deceleration, reducing travel time significantly. The trains consist of sleeper and general class coaches, aiming to ease pressure on some of the most crowded routes across the nation.
New Routes Connecting UP, Mumbai and Telangana
The latest expansion heavily features Uttar Pradesh, with several new services originating from or passing through the state. A key route is the weekly Gorakhpur-Bandra Terminus (Mumbai) service, providing a direct link for passengers travelling between eastern UP and the financial capital. Another service, the Subedarganj-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express, will connect the Prayagraj region to Mumbai. For connectivity with Telangana, the Charlapalli-Gorakhpur Amrit Bharat Express has been approved. This weekly train will link the Hyderabad area with Gorakhpur, passing through major cities like Nagpur, Bhopal, and Lucknow. This new connection is a significant step in linking southern states with the populous regions of Uttar Pradesh.
Expanding the Broader Network
Beyond the direct links for UP, Mumbai, and Telangana, the expansion covers a wide geographic area. The new services include a Dhanbad-Coimbatore train, connecting the mining hub of Jharkhand with the industrial city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. This route will pass through several states, with major stops at Prayagraj, Nagpur, and Vijayawada. Prayagraj gets another connection with the Prayagraj-Udhna Amrit Bharat Express, linking it to Udhna near Surat in Gujarat. Additionally, a Gorakhpur-Delhi Amrit Bharat Express will provide another much-needed weekly service between eastern UP and the national capital, stopping at important stations like Gonda, Bareilly, and Moradabad. In total, the seven new routes aim to strengthen rail connectivity across northern, central, western, and southern India.
What Passengers Can Expect Onboard
The Amrit Bharat Express is designed to offer a superior experience compared to older non-AC trains. Passengers can expect coaches with better aesthetics, improved ergonomic seating, and more comfortable berths. The trains are equipped with modern amenities such as mobile charging points for every seat, foldable snack tables, and improved luggage space. Toilets are modern and feature an automatic odour control system. Safety has also been a major focus, with CCTV cameras installed in all coaches, fully sealed gangways for safe movement between coaches, and an advanced fire suppression system. The jerk-free semi-permanent couplers ensure a smoother ride, making long journeys more pleasant for families and individuals alike.
