What is the Amrit Bharat Express?
The Amrit Bharat Express is a new category of superfast passenger trains designed to serve long-distance routes, primarily for the common person. Unlike premium services, these trains are entirely non-air-conditioned, consisting of sleeper and unreserved
general class coaches. The core idea is to provide an upgraded and dignified travel experience for passengers who rely on budget-friendly options, especially targeting migrant workers and families travelling on high-density routes. These trains are a key part of Indian Railways' strategy to modernise its fleet while keeping fares accessible, addressing overcrowding and enhancing connectivity between major urban centres and regional hubs.
Engineered for a Smoother, Faster Ride
A standout feature of the Amrit Bharat Express is its push-pull technology, with a locomotive at both the front and rear of the train. This configuration allows for much faster acceleration and deceleration, reducing overall journey time. For passengers, the most noticeable improvement comes from the use of semi-permanent couplers, similar to those in Vande Bharat trains. These couplers are designed to eliminate the sudden jerks and shocks often felt during starts and stops, ensuring a significantly smoother and more comfortable ride. The trains are capable of reaching speeds up to 130 kmph, making them a faster alternative to conventional mail and express services on the same routes.
Comfort and Safety on a Budget
Inside the coaches, Indian Railways has focused on amenities that enhance passenger comfort without driving up costs. The trains feature cushioned berths, improved seating ergonomics, and modern, clean toilets. Conveniences like foldable snack tables, mobile charging sockets for every passenger, and better ventilation are standard. For safety, the coaches are equipped with CCTV cameras, aerosol-based fire suppression systems, and radium illumination strips on the floor for better visibility at night. The gangways between coaches are fully sealed, which reduces noise and provides a secure, weather-protected passage for passengers moving through the train.
The Seven New Routes
The Railway Board has recently approved seven new services, significantly expanding the Amrit Bharat network across northern, central, western, and southern India. The new routes are: Dhanbad to Coimbatore: Connecting Jharkhand to Tamil Nadu via key cities like Gaya, Nagpur, and Vijayawada. Prayagraj to Udhna (Surat): A weekly service linking Uttar Pradesh with Gujarat, passing through Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Prayagraj to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): A weekly train connecting Prayagraj to Mumbai via major junctions like Itarsi and Bhusaval. Subedarganj (Prayagraj) to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): Another service from the Prayagraj region to Mumbai with different stops. Charlapalli (Hyderabad) to Gorakhpur: Linking Telangana to Uttar Pradesh via Nagpur, Bhopal, and Lucknow. Gorakhpur to Delhi: A weekly service connecting eastern Uttar Pradesh with the national capital. * Gorakhpur to Bandra Terminus (Mumbai): Connecting Gorakhpur to Mumbai via cities like Agra Fort, Kota, and Vadodara.
The Bigger Picture for Indian Railways
The introduction and expansion of the Amrit Bharat Express fleet represent a strategic move by Indian Railways to create a more inclusive and modern public transport system. By focusing on the non-AC segment, which serves the majority of its passengers, the railways are enhancing the travel experience for millions without resorting to expensive fares. These trains are designed to run on high-density corridors, helping to alleviate pressure on existing services and providing structured, reliable alternatives. This initiative supports economic mobility by connecting labour-surplus regions with industrial hubs and also boosts connectivity for pilgrimage and tourism. It is a clear effort to ensure that the benefits of modernisation reach every segment of society.
