What Sparked the Sudden Scrutiny?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has intensified its oversight of hospitality establishments as New Delhi prepares to host the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13, 2026. This high-profile event will see leaders and delegations
from member nations convene in the capital, placing India's hospitality and safety standards under a global microscope. In a proactive move, FSSAI conducted surprise inspections at several five-star hotels, specifically focusing on those in the Aerocity area, a key hub for international arrivals and accommodation for dignitaries. The crackdown led to notices being issued to at least two major hotels: JW Marriott and Andaz Delhi.
The Alarming Discoveries
The findings from the FSSAI inspections were startling for establishments of such repute. At Andaz Delhi, officials discovered and immediately discarded approximately 87 kilograms of expired sweets. They also found expired bread packets, an expired cake base, and evidence of pest infestations, including active cockroaches near freezers, houseflies, and spider webs. Inspectors noted severe lapses in basic kitchen protocol, such as vegetarian and non-vegetarian cutting boards being stored together. At the JW Marriott, inspectors recorded 59 separate deficiencies. These included fungal growth on apples, rotten tomatoes, uncovered food, and cockroaches in kitchen areas. The authorities also found a visible particle in drinking water served at one of its restaurants and noted that some food products lacked the necessary FSSAI licence for verification.
Why This Matters for the BRICS Summit
The BRICS Summit is a significant diplomatic event for India, which holds the chairship for 2026. The theme for the year is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The presence of major food safety violations at hotels expected to host international guests presents a significant reputational risk. Ensuring the health and safety of foreign dignitaries is a top priority, and these findings have triggered a wider response. Following the inspections, FSSAI convened a meeting with representatives from leading five-star hotels to emphasize a 'zero-tolerance' policy for any breaches of hygiene and safety protocols leading up to the summit. This action underscores the pressure on authorities to guarantee flawless standards and prevent any incident that could mar the high-stakes event.
What is FSSAI and What Happens Next?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the country's primary regulatory body responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety. Its mandate covers everything from setting standards for food articles to regulating their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import. Following the inspections, FSSAI has issued notices to the hotels, directing them to take immediate corrective actions. Food samples were collected from both establishments for laboratory testing. The hotels have stated their commitment to cooperating with the authorities and reinforcing their safety standards. Further regulatory action will depend on the lab results and the hotels' compliance with the directives issued. The authorities have indicated that re-inspections will be conducted to ensure the deficiencies have been rectified.
