Recent data paints a surprisingly positive picture of AI's impact on employment in India. A report from Nomura highlighted that India is a key test case for AI's effect on jobs, and so far, the results are encouraging. For every job lost or impacted by
AI, approximately 2.6 new AI-related jobs are being created. Specifically, India saw around 83,100 AI-related hires against roughly 31,921 layoffs linked to the technology between 2022 and August 2026. LinkedIn's CEO, Dan Shapero, recently confirmed this surge, noting that AI engineering roles alone are growing by 51% year-on-year in India. This counters the widespread narrative of mass unemployment, suggesting instead a massive transformation in the kinds of jobs available.
The Most In-Demand Roles Right Now
The demand for AI talent is not uniform; it is highly concentrated in specific, high-skill roles. According to hiring data, Machine Learning (ML) Engineer is the role with the highest hiring volume, appearing in a vast majority of AI job postings. However, the fastest-growing new role is Generative AI or LLM (Large Language Model) Developer, with job postings tripling since 2024. Other roles seeing significant demand include Data Scientists, AI Product Managers, MLOps Engineers, and Computer Vision Engineers. The emergence of roles like Prompt Engineer, which requires no coding, shows the broadening scope of AI-related careers. Crucially, companies are moving towards skills-first hiring, where a strong project portfolio can often matter more than a specific degree.
Essential Skills: Beyond the Buzzwords
While job titles provide a map, the actual skills requested in job descriptions reveal the ground reality. Python remains a foundational skill, but the expectation has shifted from basic scripting to building functional data pipelines. A major recent shift is the demand for experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and vector databases, skills that were barely mentioned a couple of years ago. Practical application of Generative AI and LLM APIs has become a baseline expectation for many roles. Beyond these technical skills, employers are increasingly prioritising soft skills. As AI automates routine tasks, human abilities like analytical thinking, client management, and team leadership become even more valuable. This combination of technical fluency and human-centric skills is what companies are actively seeking.
Hot Sectors: Where the Jobs Are
The adoption of AI is not limited to the tech industry. The Banking and Financial Services (BFSI) sector is a major leader, with a 68% AI adoption rate in FY24. This sector is using AI for everything from fraud detection to customer service chatbots, aiming to cut response times and costs. Following closely are the Tech, Industrial, Retail, and Healthcare sectors. IT service providers hold the largest share of the AI market. Furthermore, sectors like power generation are also rapidly adopting AI for predictive maintenance and grid management, with adoption expected to nearly double by 2030. This broad-based adoption means AI talent is needed across the entire economy, not just in traditional tech firms.
The Geographic Spread: AI Hubs and Emerging Cities
Traditionally, India's tech story has been centered around a few metropolitan hubs. Bengaluru continues to lead in AI hiring, with a significant portion of its professional members on LinkedIn possessing AI engineering skills, putting it in the same league as San Francisco. Hyderabad follows as a strong second. However, the AI map is expanding. The latest data shows that AI is creating career pathways for professionals from Tier-2 cities as well, including Lucknow, Jaipur, Coimbatore, and Nagpur. This geographic diversification is enabled by a maturing digital infrastructure and a shift towards more flexible work arrangements, spreading opportunities more widely across the nation.
