Train travel between Tamil Nadu and Kerala just received a stunning upgrade. Southern Railway has introduced a Vistadome coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, turning a regular commute into a panoramic journey through the heart of the Western Ghats.
A New Window to the Western Ghats
Southern Railway has launched a trial service featuring a special Vistadome coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (16327/16328), providing passengers an immersive way to experience one of South India’s most scenic routes. This initiative aims to boost tourism by making the journey itself a key part of the travel experience. The service, which began on October 22, 2026, marks the first time a train operating through Kerala has featured this type of specialised coach, designed specifically for sightseeing. The initial response has been overwhelming, with tickets reportedly booked out for the first couple of months, signalling strong passenger interest in this unique offering. The trial period is set to run until mid-January 2027, after which its success may lead to a permanent fixture.
Inside the Panoramic Coach
The Vistadome coach is all about the view. It is an air-conditioned cabin equipped with large, wide glass windows and a transparent glass roof, offering passengers unobstructed, panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The coach has a seating capacity of 42 to 44 passengers. The executive-style chairs are a key feature, with the ability to rotate 180 degrees, allowing travellers to always face the direction of the scenery. For added comfort, the seats are pushback-style recliners. A unique feature is the switch-operated glass roof, which can be changed from transparent to translucent. The coach is also equipped with modern amenities, including Wi-Fi based passenger information systems, an observation lounge for a wider viewing angle, and clean, modern toilet facilities.
The Scenic Route and Its Highlights
The journey connects two of South India's major pilgrimage centres, Madurai in Tamil Nadu and Guruvayur in Kerala. The most celebrated part of the route is the picturesque Sengottai-Punalur ghat section, which winds through the verdant Western Ghats. This 50-kilometre stretch offers breathtaking views of misty mountains, lush forests, valleys, and waterfalls. A major engineering and visual highlight is the historic 'Pathimoonu Kannara Paalam' or 13-Arch Bridge, an iconic structure from the British era located near Aryankavu. The train navigates numerous tunnels and bridges, showcasing both natural beauty and engineering marvels. The route through the Aryankavu Pass provides a unique opportunity to witness the rich biodiversity of this protected region from the comfort of the train.
Schedule, Fares, and Trial Period
The Vistadome coach is available on a trial basis from October 22, 2026, to January 15, 2027, on Train No. 16327 departing from Madurai. This service runs four days a week: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In the return direction, it is available on Train No. 16328 from Guruvayur from October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027, operating on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Fares vary by distance. The full journey from Madurai to Guruvayur costs approximately ₹1,875 per person. Shorter trips are also possible, with the fare from Madurai to Kollam around ₹1,140 and to Punalur at ₹1,010.
How to Book Your Seat
Booking a seat in the Vistadome coach is straightforward. Tickets can be reserved through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), mobile apps like RailOne, or at railway station reservation counters. When booking online, you must select 'Executive Chair Car' (ECC) or look for the specific Vistadome class code, which is 'EV'. It is advisable to uncheck all other travel classes during your search to specifically find Vistadome availability. Given the high demand since its launch, booking well in advance is highly recommended to secure a spot. The continuation of this popular service beyond the trial period will depend on the sustained positive response from passengers.
