What Exactly Is El Niño?
El Niño, which means "The Little Boy" in Spanish, is a natural and recurring climate pattern. It's defined by a significant warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. Under normal conditions, trade winds blow
from east to west, pushing warm surface water towards Asia. During an El Niño, these winds weaken, or even reverse, allowing the warm water to spread back towards the Americas. This large-scale shift of warm ocean water releases a tremendous amount of heat into the atmosphere, altering weather patterns across the globe. It is one phase of a larger cycle called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which also includes the opposite cooling phase, La Niña, and neutral conditions.
A 'Super' El Niño in the Making?
Recent updates from major climate agencies like the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirm that El Niño conditions are not only present but are strengthening. Forecasters have noted its rapid development, with some models suggesting it could become exceptionally intense. NOAA has indicated there is a high probability—an 81% chance—of a "very strong" El Niño developing by late 2026. An informal term for such a powerful event is a "super" El Niño, generally used when ocean temperature anomalies exceed 2 degrees Celsius above average. These events are rare, but the current trajectory shows this one has the potential to be among the strongest on record.
The Link to Global Temperatures
The primary reason a strong El Niño captures global attention is its ability to temporarily boost the planet's average temperature. The vast expanse of the warming Pacific Ocean acts like a massive radiator, releasing heat into the atmosphere. This added heat can push global temperature averages to new highs. For instance, previous strong El Niño events contributed to record-breaking global temperatures. Forecasters are suggesting that the full impact of this event will likely be felt in 2027, which could become one of the warmest years in human history, potentially even temporarily breaching the 1.5°C warming threshold.

However, it is now occurring in a world that is already significantly warmer due to human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. As the UN Secretary-General recently warned, El Niño is "adding fuel to a planet already on fire." The background warming acts as a launching pad, making the peaks of this natural cycle even higher. The combination of underlying global warming and a powerful, naturally occurring El Niño creates a potent mix that can lead to more extreme weather events and unprecedented temperature records across the world.
Potential Impacts for India
For India, an El Niño event is watched with particular concern due to its potential impact on the southwest monsoon. Strong El Niño events are historically linked to a weakening of the monsoon, which supplies about 70-75% of the country's annual rainfall. The WMO's latest outlook notes that drier-than-normal conditions are more likely over the Indian subcontinent. This can lead to deficient rainfall, raising the risk of drought, impacting agricultural output, and affecting water reservoir levels. Additionally, El Niño years are often associated with hotter-than-average temperatures and more severe heatwaves across the country, which can have significant effects on public health and electricity demand.
